“Without him, they do not stand a chance” Jay Williams classifies Mavericks as first-round exits following Luka Doncic injury
Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic is hands down the best young talent in the NBA at the moment. Trying to understand how the Western Conference playoff bracket would work out is rather impossible due to various reasons such as injuries and highly dominant players like Doncic. The Dallas Mavericks have entered their third post-season appearance since his arrival onto the roster.
The Mavs finished their regular season as the fourth seed in the West with a record of 52 wins and 30 losses. They turned out to become one of the biggest surprises especially since Luka Doncic has been leading the team single-handedly. Former teammates Kristaps Porzingis was traded to Washington in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans earlier in February. The Mavs are set to face the Utah Jazz during the first round of the 2021-22 NBA playoffs.
Luka Doncic gets injured during the season closer against the Spurs
Luke Doncic has played the leader this entire season averaging 28.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game. He shot 45.7% from the field, and 35.3% from beyond the arc making significantly more three-pointers than he has in his last couple of seasons with 3.1 on 8.8 attempts per game. From March 28th to April 11th, Luka has not had a single game below 25 points.
During the Mavs season closer, Doncic suffered from a leg injury during the game which was later diagnosed as a calf strain earlier this week. NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski shed some light on the situation with the All-Star guard. He said, “The Mavericks are very much preparing for the possibility of not only maybe not having Luka Doncic in Game 1, but maybe even Game 2 on Monday. If this was the regular season, you wouldn’t even be talking about him possibly playing this weekend.”
Jay Williams says Mavericks is a first-round exit without Luka Doncic
Jason Kidd gave a briefing on Luka Doncic’s injury saying, “Looks like he is improving. He has not (convinced me that he can play). But hopefully, at some point he does. But not right now.” According to the head coach of the Mavericks, Doncic has been showing signs of improvement but is not entirely recovered from the injury just yet. Doncic makes up 26.5% of their total offense which will impact their series against the Jazz in round one.
Jay Williams opinionates on how important Luke Doncic is to the team. He said, “They don’t get passed the Jazz. Luka counts for close to 60% of their scoring, I’m talking of assists and scoring himself. Him and Jokic are like one-man shows. They do so much with passing, scoring, getting rebounds, and making plays. Without him, they do not have a chance against the Utah Jazz.”
