Zion Williamson

Ja Morant and Zion Williamson were the top two picks out of the 2019 NBA Draft. That specific draft class drew a lot of attention towards it especially because of these two players. It was one of the most exciting drafts since 2003 when LeBron James and his peers entered the league. However, only one player lived up to the hype that was created around their name.

Zion Williamson would not make his debut until later during that season after undergoing surgery for a torn right lateral meniscus. Despite making a late entrance, he averaged an impressive 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game on 58.3% from the field.

Zion Williamson played 61 games last season averaging a much higher 27 points per game along with 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. He shot 58.3% from the field, 42.9% from three but did not make too many attempts, and 64% from the line. These numbers could have been used for the betterment of the New Orleans Pelicans as Williamson is also a very defensively talented individual.

On the contrary, his former AAU teammate, Morant entered the 2021-22 season as one of the biggest surprises out of the Western Conference finishing the regular season with the second-best record in the NBA (56 wins and 25 losses). Morant who became an MVP candidate averaged 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game. He is also a candidate for the league’s Most Improved Player award. The Pelicans have somehow managed to sneak into the play-in tournament with the help of Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum. This could be a good sign for the Pelicans’ future if Zion returns in form.

Zion Williamson did not make an appearance on the court this season after fracturing his right foot. A major reason for his injury is because of his weight. Many have criticized his physique and some have already labeled him as a bust. Williamson has been in rehabilitation since the start, in Portland. Recently he was seen in a pregame team scrimmage according to Pelicans Coach Willie Green.
