Recently Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal in javelin at the Tokyo Olympics, as he scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a track and field medal. He came home to much fanfare as the country celebrated the most successful Olympics for India till date.

Chopra opened up about his interaction with Pakistani javelin thrower in a recent interview with TOI. Nadeem created waves as he became the first athlete from his country to qualify for a track and field finals. Things went slight awry on the day of the finals at the Tokyo Olympics for Chopra.

Just before his first throw, Neeraj seemed to not be able to locate his javelin, which he later found Arshad roaming around with. He asked Arshad to give him back the javelin as he hurriedly went on to take his first throw. This news caused controversy, as Indian media started to raise allegations against Nadeem for trying to cause an impairment in the javelin before Chopra’s throw.

Nadeem responded to the allegations, saying that all the javelins were provided by Olympic management, and he was not sure whether the javelin he had in his hands was Chopra’s or not. As things got slightly out of hand, Chopra took to twitter to clear up the matter once and for all.

Chopra took to twitter, and firstly thanked his fans for the support they have given him through out the journey. He said that the interaction between him and Nadeem had been taken out of context and was being made into something it was not.

Chopra went on to clarify that even when personal javelins are kept on the stand during any tournament, it is a rule that other players are allowed to use the javelin.

Chopra said that there was nothing wrong in Arshad using the javelin to prepare for his throw, and the former simply took the javelin from Arshad just before his first throw. Neeraj said that it was not a big deal, and he was quite disappointed that his words were used in a wrong way.

“I would request everyone to please not use me and my comments as a medium to further your vested interests and propaganda. Sports teaches us to be together and united. I’m extremely disappointed to see some of the reactions from the public on my recent comments,” said Chopra.
