The 2022 season will be a busy one for Indian track-and-field athletes what with the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games scheduled to be held within a span of three months starting with the Worlds in July.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic Champion in Men’s Javelin, will be looking to defend his 2018 CWG and Asiad golds and would also be eyeing a maiden World Championship medal with the elusive 90m+ throw being an additional incentive.
The athlete and his team have accordingly prepared his training schedule for the year. As reported by a number of publications, Neeraj, his German coach Klaus Bartonietz, and physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha will be joining a 44-day Sports Authority of India-sanctioned training camp at the Gloria Sports Arena in Antalya, Turkey from March 28th to May 11th.
Neeraj Chopra looking forward to participating in Diamond Leagues and World Championship
The Times of India report stated that the government will spend Rs 50,000 per day on Neeraj’s stay, his six-week-long training stint costing Rs 22,38,394 in total. Neeraj had put in a request with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for an off-season training camp, and the same was forwarded to SAI, which cleared the proposal.
Neeraj told TOI in an interview: “After my winter training stint in the United States, the exposure trip to Turkey will be an important part of my preparation phase ahead of a challenging 2022 season. I am looking forward to continuing my training and working hard to be in the best shape possible and perform to the best of my abilities in the targeted competitions this year. This year, I’ll be participating in Diamond Leagues, the Worlds, CWG and Asian Games. It’s a challenging year for me. I’ll be competing in Europe for the majority of this season, so this trip to Antalya will help me a lot in preparing for these events. My efforts would be on staying injury-free and will focus on my fitness level.”
Neeraj was earlier part of a training camp at USA’s Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Centre. The camp began on December 5th and was scheduled to be completed on March 4th but was briefly extended. The World Championships this year will also take place at USA’s Oregon from July 15th to July 24th. Neeraj is presently training at Patiala and will fly out to Turkey later this month.
As per an ETV Bharat report, Neeraj will not be participating in the Federation Cup to be held at Kozhikode, Kerala in April. He is also doubtful for the Doha Diamond League on May 13th. Neeraj has not been seen in competitive action since winning the historic Olympic gold in August last year.
