A major upset was witnessed at the 2024 Paris Olympics as Donna Vekic beat Coco Gauff in the third round. Gauff was cruising well in her Olympics debut, taking part in all formats in the French capital. Unfortunately, her singles journey came to an end much earlier than expected.
From the get-go, her match against Vekic was a blockbuster. It was drama-filled as both players fought hard for their points. With a lot at stake, they kept fighting to try to put each other under pressure.
Gauff and Vekic were playing well until the first set tie-break, where the Croatian got a bit lucky and pulled ahead of the American to take the lead in the contest. From this point onwards, Vekic seemed unstoppable as she continued to pressurize Gauff in the second set.
At one point, the pressure got to the American. Vekic was on the verge of a break-point in the second set when the ball went out before Gauff hit it. However, the umpire did not consider that and the youngster burst into tears as she argued with the chair umpire.
Fans booed her on court for the argument and fans online also called her out for causing a scene at the Games. They were not happy with Vekic waiting for Gauff to finish her argument and return to lose the match.

Vekic’s ball was called out, but it was in, so the line judge corrected it.

Fans lash out at Coco Gauff for causing a scene during her match against Donna Vekic
The third-round singles match between Coco Gauff and Donna Vekic saw a bit of a pause as the American argued with the chair umpire over a call. The call was very close, but the umpire had awarded the point to Vekic, which triggered Gauff, who was in tears while arguing with the umpire.
Fans were not happy with the wait and bashed Gauff for it. Here are some reactions from social media:
Gauff should have been penalised here for delay of game. Right or wrong the decision was made. More did make the correct decision it seems anyway. To continuously say “it always happens to me here” 500 times is delaying the game and trying to get to Vekic. Glad Vekic won

'Another Serena' was the correct term for her not talent-wise but in other ways…

What is with this "you guys are not fair to me" crap. Meaning what exactly?

The dramatics! ??♂️

I really hope that she learns from this and adjusts her attitude… Sometimes things are going happen in life and on the tennis court that “aren’t fair”. You can’t have a melt down in response every time. It’s one point. Move on and put it out of your mind. That’s what the greats…

Biggest fraud in the top 10 her and Sakkari

Coco needs to figure out a way to navigate these situations better, though. She made her point to the umpire, maybe she was right, but she ended up getting herself more upset and worked up in the process. She let this match go in the first set, which was not the umpires doing.

Is there ANY match that Gauff doesn’t cry? What a mess

Nevertheless, it was a tough outing for Vekic, who beat one of the top contenders of the tournament. Gauff was in raging form in her previous matches and was also in good touch in the first set. However, after the argument, she lost her spirit to fight and eventually went down 7-6(7), 6-2.
