Novak Djokovic registered his third victory over Rafael Nadal at the courts of Roland Garros. On Monday (July 29), Djokovic pulled off his 31st win over the Spaniard to move further in his search for the Olympic gold in Paris.
But Djokovic, who has a history of teasing the crowd and vice-versa, did not forget to make them wild again with his same old gesture. He put his left finger behind his ear as if he was trying to listen to the roar of the crowd after the defeat of their ‘favorite’ player.
Nadal being a winner at the French Open for a record 14 times, can be called the crowd’s favorite. The passionate crowd at the Roland Garros, notorious for interrupting the players with their loud noise, or booing the players they don’t like, was silenced by Djokovic when he beat Nadal in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

Nadal, who is also playing in doubles with four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, was uncertain about his singles participation at the Games. He made a last-moment decision to play in singles and beat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in three sets.
Fans criticize Novak Djokovic for mocking the crowd after the win
This month at the Wimbledon, controversy around Novak Djokovic again erupted when he blamed the crowd for ‘disrespecting’ him. From mimicking their chants to bidding them a good night in a sarcastic way, Djokovic made sure the crowd understand that he had had enough of their jeers. He was slammed heavily for his gesture by the fans and they again criticized him on social media for mocking the Roland Garros crowd in this Olympics.

As Rafael Nadal was losing the games one after the other, Djokovic thought it would be an easy win for him. He admitted that during the first set, he rather became too complacent and that’s when Nadal seized the moment and tried to force a comeback.
Now that the two-time Olympic gold medalist crashed out of the singles event, he will now completely focus on his doubles matches. Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will next face the Dutch pair of Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof in the second round.
