Spanish tennis ace and former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz entered the 2024 US Open as one of the title favorites. However, against all odds, the 21-year-old made an early exit after losing his second-round match against Botic Van de Zandschulp. The Dutchman pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, beating the 2022 champion 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday (August 29).
Alcaraz looked out of touch and could never recover from the first-set loss where he could win only one game. Despite trying hard in the third set to shift the momentum in his favor, he fell short and will now have to go home empty-handed and disappointed.
This defeat for Alcaraz was shocking not just for the player but for the tennis fraternity. The third seed came with a lot of momentum on his side and a favorable head-to-head record against Van de Zandschulp. However, the 28-year-old played a near-flawless game and eased his way into the third round with a straight-sets win.

While the tennis fraternity was in shock, Van de Zandschulp was lost for words to describe his emotions after the win. The Dutchman, who was considering retirement from tennis a few months back, has now defeated the reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion in straight sets. He is set to face 25th seed Jack Draper in the third round on Saturday.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, has suffered his first loss in the second round of a Grand Slam since at Wimbledon 2021, where the then-World No. 75 lost to second seed Daniil Medvedev.
