Alexander Bublik lost his cool during his first-round China Open match against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli on the Diamond Court on Thursday (September 26). He won the first set but was able to win just one game in the second set, during which he smashed his racket to pieces.
After Cobolli won the opening two games of the second set, the eighth seed’s backhand went straight into the net. Bublik got furious over this mistake and, as a consequence, he started to break his racket. This is not the first time that Bublik has destroyed his racket in a fit of rage.

In the third set, however, despite Bublik’s incessant efforts, he failed to secure a place in the next round. This match was their first encounter on the ATP Tour.
The World No. 32, who won the match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(7-4), will next face Russia’s unseeded Pavel Kotov. They have played two matches before, in the 2024 Australian Open Round of 64 and the fourth round in Marrakech, with Bublik and Cobolli winning one match each. The 22-year-old Cobolli is searching for his first title on the ATP Tour.
Here’s how fans reacted to Alexander Bublik’s yet another racket-smashing incident
Though racket-smashing incidents have become a common scene, many netizens are not ready to forgive the players as kids also watch these matches. Others, however, found them entertaining. A fan found the entire incident boring, as Alexander Bublik losing his cool during matches has become a frequent scene.

This sport is brutal! You are all by yourself alone to figure that out on the court – irrespective of whatever is going on with you on and off the court. “The Game Within” is bigger game in tennis, specially in this sport. It’s brutal scoring system and pressure. All the players…

Why, I thought he is a fun guy.

V disappointing from Bublik. I heard Wilson fines their sponsored player every time they break a racquet. That seems like a good idea.

The World No. 26 is also playing doubles in Beijing and will kick-start his campaign along with Pedro Martinez against Yunchaokete Bu and Stan Wawrinka. In doubles, Bublik, who stands in the 123rd spot in the rankings, has never won a title and is 8–12 this season.
Before the China Open, the Kazakhstani featured in the Chengdu Open and made it to the quarterfinals where home favorite Juncheng Shang defeated him in straight sets before clinching the title by beating Lorenzo Musetti. Shang is also the one who defeated Bublik in the first round of this year’s US Open after playing five sets.
Bublik reached multiple finals in 2024 but was able to win the Open Sud de France by beating Borna Coric in three sets. Overall, the 27-year-old clinched four titles on the ATP Tour.
