“He’s finding a new profession!” – Fans go WILD as Nets’ Dennis Schroder makes surprise soccer debut

Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Schroder has surprisingly made his professional soccer debut for FC Germania Bleckenstedt in the sixth tier of the German soccer scene. This comes after he played a full NBA season with two different teams. Schroder played 62 minutes in the team’s 5-1 loss to SC Gottingen before being substituted off.

Schroder’s soccer debut may come as a surprise, but he is no stranger to representing Germany in sports. He helped lead the country to its first-ever men’s FIBA World Cup title in September and is preparing to represent his country in the basketball tournament at the Olympics in Paris.

The German national team will face France, Japan, and the winner of a six-team qualifying tournament in Latvia in the Olympics. Schroder’s soccer team, FC Germania Bleckenstedt, is part of the Landesliga Braunschweig, a league centered in the German state of Lower Saxony.

Schroder has a personal connection to the region, having been born in Braunschweig, the state’s second-largest city. He also spent his early career with Braunschweig-based teams and made his soccer debut a homecoming of sorts.

Schroder averaged 14 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.0 rebounds last season with the Brooklyn Nets and the Toronto Raptors. Brooklyn had acquired the FIBA champion at the trade deadline in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie.

Schroder’s decision to try out his country’s most popular sport was out of a desire to keep fit for the Olympics, albeit a strange choice of fitness regime. But it has surely stirred a lot of frenzy in the debate of “basketball players can play soccer while soccer players can’t play basketball.”
