Jon Gruden last coached in the NFL in 2021. That was a premature exit from the 10-year contract he had with the Las Vegas Raiders. That untimely exit was a result of his emails getting exposed in the media. Since then, he has tried to fight back by filing a contract interference and conspiracy lawsuit against the NFL. Only for it to almost go into arbitration to be overlooked by Roger Goodell. However, he appealed asking for the lawsuit to be heard in court. But it was rejected.
Jon Gruden filed the lawsuit in 2021 alleging that the league forced him out. His lawsuit suggested that the NFL intentionally leaked his racist, sexist and homophobic emails which he sent when he was working with ESPN. That led him to resign from the Raiders and he has not been able to come back into the league as a coach. However, as per ESPN via the Associated Press, the Nevada Supreme Court rejected his appeal for reconsideration for arbitration.
Had he won, then Roger Goodell and the NFL would have to fight this lawsuit in public court. The former head coach had alleged that the NFL selectively chose to reveal his emails. Something they obtained while going through 650,000 emails from the Washington Commanders while investigating workplace culture.
The former Super Bowl-winning coach is seeking monetary damages. He alleges that this entire fiasco has destroyed his career and scuttled endorsement contracts. Leaving him out of work for a long time. However, Jon Gruden’s 2nd stint with the Raiders was not particularly an impressive one.
Jon Gruden’s 2nd stint with the Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders hired Jon Gruden to make them a Super Bowl contender. They had 4 Pro-Bowlers and a solid team which needed good coaching. However, Gruden wanted to make his own mark on the team. He traded away All-Pro Khalil Mack and star wide receiver Amari Cooper for 1st round picks.
He also signed veterans to fill out the roster as he went about putting his imprint on the squad. A few of his draft picks did turn out to be good for the team. However, until his resignation, they never made the playoffs. However, as soon as he left, interim head coach Rich Bisaccia led the team to the playoffs.
No one knows what would have been had Gruden been around to lead his team. After all, he had helped build the Raiders of the late 90’s. A team that was good enough to win. But it is clear now that there is no return for him in the NFL.
