Iga Swiatek stormed past Daria Kasatkina in her third group-stage match. The Pole secured a 6-1, 6-0 win within an hour and received praise from her new coach Wim Fissette.

Swiatek’s match against Barbora Krejcikova was her first match under Fissette. The Pole, who felt ‘rusty’, eked out a victory in three sets, but fell to Coco Gauff in the second match, registering her only second defeat against the 20-year-old in their 13 matches on the WTA Tour. But as she breezed past Kasatkina, Fissette heaped some massive praise on the World No. 2.

Absolutely! I think the perfect match from Iga today. And yeah, really happy to see her play this level you know. Again for me, it’s all pretty new so ten days Warsow before coming here then saw a tough match against Krejcikova. Then difficult match against Gauff and now I saw the perfect match against Kasatkina, so, I am learning a lot.

Swiatek started to work with Fissette just ahead of the WTA Finals. He had coached Grand Slam champions like Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, Victoria Azarenka, and Simona Halep.

Iga Swiatek’s new coach Wim Fissette had backed Coco Gauff to top the group at the WTA Finals

Ahead of the Coco Gauff-Barbora Krejcikova match, Swiatek’s new coach Wim Fissette talked about how they would be focusing a lot on Gauff’s match. Fissette had also said Gauff would try her all to not face Sabalenka in the semifinals.

And I think, if she has to choose between playing Sabalenka or Zheng, I would probably choose Zheng. So I think there are a lot of reasons for her to try to win.

Swiatek’s further run at the WTA Finals depended on the match result of Gauff and Krejcikova even after her easy victory over Daria Kasatkina. As Krejcikova emerged as the winner over Gauff, she not only secured a berth in the semifinals, but her victory ended Swiatek’s dream of another WTA Finals title.

Gauff tried her all but in the end, the reigning Wimbledon champion denied her to top her group with a 7-5, 6-4 win. The American is now set to lock horns with World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.

Before the 44-year-old Belgian coach, the former World No.1 had Tomasz Wiktorowski in her team and after announcing the split from her longtime coach, Swiatek revealed she wanted to work with a non-Polish coach.
