Ryan Garcia had much to prove while fighting at Barclays Center, NY, before 19,000 in attendance. In the lead-up to the fight, ‘King Ry’ had displayed much concerning mannerisms. Many fans and pundits called for the bout’s cancelation. However, the pro boxer silenced all doubters with his victory over the undefeated Devin Haney. With the playing field wide open, Gervonta Davis is next in the equation.
Davis, aka Abdul Wahid, stands at 29-0-0 and 27 KOs. The former WBA super featherweight and undefeated lightweight champ fought Garcia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Davis won via TKO in Round 7 after a body shot rendered Garcia unable to continue. Gervonta Davis handed Garcia the only loss of his career when he dropped to 136 pounds. Hence, a rematch would be the natural course.
I don’t think Tank’s going to beat Frank Martin, but if he did, he wouldn’t fight me because I’m moving up, I’m not doing 140. I’m going 147. I can’t make f*cking 140. I never even technically fought at 140... I fought every time at 143...My body can’t literally go lower than 143...Ryan Garcia in his Post-Fight Press Conference
Boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who represents Garcia under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, interjected. With the boxer saying he can’t drop down yet again, De La Hoya advocated for a “catchweight” fight. Garcia didn’t shut down a potential rematch with ‘Tank’ but isn’t contemplating 140 anytime soon. In fact, with the dominant majority decision win, he now chose to move up.
De La Hoya agreed to the proposition. His overt public feud with Garcia was quite infamous, but with ‘King Ry’ coming out on top, he’s the prime staple of Golden Boy Promotions. De La Hoya even labeled Garcia as the “current face of boxing” after defeating Haney. Consequently, Davis also took the chance to praise Garcia and mock Haney on social media.
Gervonta Davis issues shoutout to Ryan Garcia after win; wants to party with him
Barclays Center, NY, saw Ryan ‘King Ry’ Garcia improve to 2-0 after his lone career skid to Gervotna Davis. In the main event of the DAZN Exclusive 12-round bout, Garcia edged out Devin Haney via majority decision. The official scores read 115-109, 114-110, and 112-112. Boxing Junkie also scored it 114-110 favoring Garcia.
Meanwhile, ‘Tank’ seems to be quite happy about it. He has quite often mocked Devin Haney on several occasions. Consequently, his sparring video with Haney, which Garcia prematurely released a while back, only added to the spice. With Haney claiming dominance over both, there isn’t any love lost. Check out what Davis wrote after the match:
He tagged Garcia on his X account, offering on-the-house party treatment for the victory. Soon after, he also took to social media to mock Haney and his father, Bill Haney, who was ringside. All in all, the matter has instigated quite a few reactions from ‘Tank.’ While he did hand Garcia his maiden defeat, there hasn’t been any immediate news on wanting to meet up with the boxer in a sequel bout. Only time will tell if they meet in the ring again and who emerges the victor if they do.
