New Jersey propose $1.3 billion project to Joel Embiid and Philadelphia 76ers
City of Philadelphia are against the plan to allow a new arena in the City Center area.
Joel Embiid and Philadelphia 76ers could relocate to New Jersey as new $1.3 billion arena proposal hits roadblocks
The Philadelphia 76ers have been an integral part of the culture of the city for over 60 years. But it could all change soon as owners Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment are planning to shift the franchise. A move that could see Joel Embiid and his teammates play in the nearby state of New Jersey.
ROI NJ reported that the state of New Jersey is considering a serious push to bring the 76ers over to their state. That is because the lease of the current arena, Wells Fargo Center is ending after the 2030-31 season. The franchise has been looking to build a new arena in the Philadelphia City Center for quite some time. However, they have faced nothing but roadblocks so far, prompting HBSE and the state of New Jersey to explore shifting the franchise to Camden, just 15 minutes away.
But that is a completely different state altogether. If the state is willing to give them land, funding as well as all the necessary sanctions, they could demand for the franchise to be renamed. This means the name could possibly change to the New Jersey 76ers. It is not as if HBSE are looking for any funding, as they have suggested that they can fund their own arena.
However, even if they are willing to invest the $1.3 billion needed for the new arena, they have faced roadblocks from within the city. As both public officials, as well as fans, are concerned for an increase in traffic and congestion around the city center. Perhaps an NBA title can change their opinion.
Philadelphia 76ers looking for first NBA title in 40 years
The Philadelphia 76ers have been starved of an NBA title since they won it in 1983. Now more than 40 years have passed and none of the rosters have been able to clinch title No. 4. Many legendary players have walked through the halls, yet they could not do the job.
Now, the roster GM Daryl Morey has been able to construct will look to finish the job. Joel Embiid already has Tyrese Maxey beside him. But now gets the signing of this off-season in Paul George. Not only is he a bonafide superstar, but his skills fit well with Embiid and Maxey. Then the additions of Caleb Martin, Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond were some excellent work from Morey.
Add to that two draft picks who can contribute from the bench and the 76ers look like a legitimate NBA title contender. Now they just have to finish the job and possibly force the city of Philadelphia to do everything to retain the franchise.
