There seems to be some big changes coming to the Tour Championship of the PGA Tour. The Tour Championship event concludes the PGA Tour season as the race for the FedEx Cup also comes to an end.

At the moment, the performances of the players earn them some FedEx Cup points. These points are then carried over towards the end of the season tournament. Before the event each year, the players are given a certain number of strokes as per their FedEx Cup standings.

This is something that has received huge backlash from the fans in the past. As a result of this ‘staggered start‘, Scottie Scheffler started at 10-under par for the tournament last year. This led to an easy win for him as he was declared the FedEx Cup winner. Fans do not like this format as the number one player gets a massive boost and eventually ends the competition even before the event starts.

Earlier this year, there had been reports that the PGA Tour was trying to implement a new format this year. PGA Tour player-director Adam Scott at that time expressed that he had no idea how a bracket style format would work.

As per Golfweek, the PGA Tour are proposing to remove the starting strokes format. The idea for a March Madness-style bracket tournament was also rejected by the Tour. According to the new format, a cut line could be implemented to make it to the round of 16. The top 8 could advance to Saturday while the top 4 advance to the final round on Sunday.

As of now, these rules are not official yet. As per the report from Golfweek, the PGA Tour will take a vote regarding this in the upcoming weeks. More details regarding this format could be released at that time.

Who is currently leading the season-long FedEx Cup standings of the PGA Tour?

The FedEx Cup is one of the prestigious titles on the PGA Tour. The player who performs well in the season will start the Tour Championship with a score of 10-under par and have a huge advantage for the others.

At the moment, World No.2 Rory McIlroy sits on top of these standings. The Northern Irish golfer finally won the Masters Tournament this year and completed the career grand slam. His win at the Masters was his third win on the PGA Tour this year.

In February, he walked away as the winner from Pebble Beach as he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. A month later, he overcame J.J. Spaun in a playoff round to win his 2nd The Players Championship title.

The 5-time major champion sits on top of the standings as of April 26. With his impressive performances on the PGA Tour this year, he has collected 2,433 points. If he remains on top by the time of the Tour Championship, he will start the PGA Tour finale with a 10-under par score.

Former World No.1 Justin Thomas is currently ranked 2nd in the standings with 1,669 points. Last week, the American golfer finally broke his winless run and claimed his 1st victory in almost 3 years by winning the RBC Heritage. Sepp Straka, who won the American Express in January, is third with 1,398 points.
