On Monday night, the New York Golf Club and the Boston Common Golf entered the TGL arena with the aim of qualifying for the playoffs in their minds. During this intense match, Boston’s captain Rory McIlroy made a blunder, leading to the opposition trolling him and painfully reminding him about his blown U.S. Open last year.

During the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, McIlroy was leading the pack for a long time. In the ending stages, he missed a two-foot and three-foot putt at the 16th and 18th holes, which allowed Bryson DeChambeau to come back and snatch the title from McIlroy.

On Monday night, McIlroy found himself on the center stage again. On the very first hole, he was presented with a chance to sink a 5ft putt.

What happened next? McIlroy missed it. The 4-time major champion’s putt rolled away from the hole at the end, leaving him and his team surprised.

The New York Golf Club would take advantage of this and poke fun at McIlroy on X. They would drop a 6-word reaction and trolled him for his meltdown at the U.S. Open.

Didn’t know we were playing Pinehurst…

McIlroy and his team went on to lose the game by a 10-6 score as Xander Schauffele sealed the deal for his team during his return. This result saw the New York Golf Club book their spot in the playoffs while eliminating the Boston Common Golf in the process, who finished the inaugural season without any wins.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods both out of TGL playoff contention in first season of TGL

When the TGL was announced, Jupiter Links GC and the Boston Common Golf were the ones who were under heavy spotlight. The reason for this was because the co-founders of the league – Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were leading the franchises as team captains. Following the results on Monday night, both of these teams are out of contention from the playoff in the first season of the league.

In the 4 matches they have played so far, Jupiter Links GC only has one win. That was an overtime win against Boston Common Golf. With 2 points from 4 games, Woods’ side cannot qualify for the next stage as NYGC have 5 points from their 5 games after the win on Monday.

As for McIlroy and co, they did not win a single game. Despite winning 16 holes in 5 games, they lost 4 games in regular time and one in overtime. That OT loss gave them their sole point of the 2025 season.

The top four teams will now battle it out in the semifinals on March 17. The winners of the two semifinals will face off in a “best-of-three” final format to determine the inaugural champion of the TGL.
