New Zealand vs West Indies: Kemar Roach decides to play despite father’s death
Kemar Roach

West Indies fast-bowler Kemar Roach showed incredible strength and courage as he decided to stay with his national team and play in the 1st Test match against New Zealand today. In memory of the West Indian’s late father, both teams wore black armbands on the first day of the Test.

Roach’s father Andrew Smith passed away on December 1, two days before the start of the Test series. Although the pacer had the option of returning to West Indies, he decided to stay on and take part in the Test series and the first Test that commenced today at Seddon Park in New Zealand.

Roach picks up key wicket on Day 1

On Day 1 of the Test match that commenced today, West Indies won the toss and surprisingly opted to bowl. But they got their reward early on when Shannon Gabriel removed Will Young cheaply. However, skipper Kane Williamson and Tom Latham stitched together a huge partnership of over 150 runs.

It was Kemar Roach who broke the partnership with a terrific delivery to bowl Latham out. Instead of celebrating in his usual pumped manner, an emotional Roach dropped down to his knees and honored his father. That was the last wicket West Indies would got on the day as Williamson stroked his way to an unbeaten 97 along with Ross Taylor who remained unbeaten on 31.
