Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes opened up about his conversation with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola amid recent transfer rumors. The Brazilian has been linked with a move to the reigning EPL champions, who are in search of a defensive midfielder.
Manchester City were reportedly interested in signing Bruno Guimaraes during the summer transfer window. This interest was despite Bruno having signed a new five-year contract with Newcastle. Man City were in search of a replacement for Rodri, who faces persistent injury issues. However, the club decided against triggering the 27-year-old player’s £100 million release clause.
The Cityzens instead opted to re-sign Ilkay Gundogan from FC Barcelona, just a year after he had moved out of the club. Speaking in an interview with Globo Esporte, the Newcastle star surprisingly revealed details about the links and his chat with Pep Guardiola.
Expressing pride over being the Newcastle captain, he bragged about being an idol at his current club. Moreover, he added that the Man City links prove his worth and quality. He, however, brushed aside the rumors by labeling them as mere ‘suggestions’. He shared details of his conversation with the Spanish manager, whom he claimed admires his footballing skills.

Bruno will be high on the list of transfer targets during the upcoming window, owing to the major deficit of defensive midfielders all around the world. The 27-year-old most recently featured for Brazil during the international break. He is set to return to action for Newcastle against West Ham.
Arsenal shortlist Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi as top midfielder transfer targets in the future
The Gunners have reportedly shortlisted Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as primary midfielder targets in the years to come. This comes despite Arsenal having signed Euro 2024 star Mikel Merino during the summer transfer window.
Mikel Arteta has stressed improving Arsenal’s midfield. He will be hoping to make some major signings during the later transfer windows. The club has reportedly set its sights on signing Guimaraes in the future, having failed to acquire him in the summer. Arsenal has offered to swap Aaron Ramsdale in exchange for the talented defensive midfielder. They were however denied.
Another player whom the club might be targeting in the future is Spanish star Zubimendi, who is one of Europe’s most talented emerging midfielders. Zubimendi had reportedly rejected an offer this summer from another Premier League side, Liverpool.
