Premier League: Newcastle United vs Watford Players Ratings as Watford stole a late point to draw 1-1 vs the Toons.

Newcastle United vs Watford: Newcastle United hosted fellow relegation strugglers Watford to the St. James’ Park on Matchday 22. 

Both Newcastle and Watford knew they needed the points however, they canceled each other out and ultimately had to share the spoils. Newcastle was the better team and they went ahead courtesy of trickery from Allan Saint-Maximin but a resilient Watford side drew level late in the game through João Pedro to keep Watford ahead of Newcastle in the relegation dogfight.

Newcastle United

Martin Dúbravka (7.5/10): Birthday boy Dúbravka had a relatively quiet evening, he didn’t have much say in the game but was alert whenever his team needed him. The Slovakian tried his best but couldn’t prevent the equalizer. 

Paul Dummett (8 /10): Paul Dummett had a really good outing. He stood his ground, made a couple of interceptions and blocks and he had Emmanuel Denis in his pocket. Completely blocked everything that Watford came up with on the left flank. 

Fabian Schär (7/10): Schär had a decent game, he made some good tackles, and was strong and agile. Showed an eye for hitting long balls to Chris Wood, but could do little about João Pedro’s headed equalizer. 

Jamaal Lascelles (8 /10): The Englishman alongside Schär kept Watford attackers quiet all game and dictated the proceedings well, moved the balls forwards on some occasions. Overall a good, solid display. 

Kieran Trippier (7/10): The new signing will still need some to gel with his teammates. He moved up and down the right-flank well, and combined nicely with Sean Longstaff.

Joelinton (8 /10): Came closest to scoring the opener not once but twice. By far the best Newcastle player in the first half. Joelinton looked like a threat all game as he kept the Watford midfielders and defense at their toes. 

Jonjo Shelvey (7.5/10): Shelvey collected a needless booking courtesy of his rash challenge early in the game but he recovered well and sprayed passes all-over pitch later in the game. Delivered a great long ball assist to Allan Saint-Maximin for his goal. 

Allan Saint-Maximin (8/10): The Frenchman was at his usual best, dazzling and dribbling all over the pitch, he pounced upon the mistake of Jeremy Ngakia, dribbled past two men, and finished with aplomb. Continued to haunt Watford’s defence till the very last second he was on the pitch. 

Ryan Fraser (6.5/10): Fraser had an average game. He played well in the second half, tried to keep carving out chances for his team. Ultimately though he couldn’t affect the proceedings much and was substituted midway through the second half. 

Sean Longstaff (7/10): Sean Longstaff worked like a horse down the right flank in the first half. Delivered plenty of balls from the wing but his final delivery lacked a cutting edge. Overall, he had a good evening. 

Chris Wood (7.5 /10): Chris Wood’s debut in Newcastle colors went well. He was the focal point of most Newcastle attacks. Played well with his back to the goal, had a couple of half-chances but overall gave a good account of himself to the St. James’ Park faithful. 

Substitutes:

Jacob Murphy (6/10): Murphy came on to replace Ryan Fraser, and he did what was asked of him. Tried to combine with his teammates but couldn’t have much say in the outcome of the game.

Watford

Ben Foster (6.5/10): Ben Foster was rooted to his spot for the opening goal, perhaps his positioning could have been better. That being said, he was alert to everything else, as he kept Newcastle at par. 

Jeremy Ngakia (5/10): Was at fault for the opener, misjudged the ball’s bounce, and was left chasing dust as Allan Saint-Maximin robbed him of possession and scored the winner. Ngakia was replaced by Kiko Femenía in the second half. 

Hassane Kamara (7/10): Kamara also made his debut for Watford on Saturday, he was neat with the ball at his feet, made a couple of good moves down the left, and was strong yet agile in his first outing. 

Craig Cathcart (6.5/10): The center-back had a mediocre game. Perhaps he could have gotten closer to Saint-Maximin to cut out the angle, but other than that, Cathcart made a couple of last-ditch challenges and prevented Newcastle from running away with the game. 

Samir (7/10): Samir was another debutant on the field today. He was a pillar at the back for Watford, the Brazilian put in a good shift at the back. 

Moussa Sissoko (6.5/10): Playing against his former club, Moussa Sissoko missed the best chance of the game. He was booked for a rash challenge on Saint-Maximin but failed to impress on his return to St. James’ Park. 

Juraj Kucka (6/10): Despite his best efforts, Juraj Kucka couldn’t influence the game much. He was subdued in his performance, and couldn’t win the midfield battle which Newcastle clearly dominated. 

Edo Kayembe (7/10): The Congolese player combined well with Joshua King and João Pedro, was at the heart of various Watford attacks. Ultimately though he can be proud of his shift. 

Joshua King (6.5/10): King failed to score past the Newcastle keeper when sent through on goal, but apart from them he worked hard, tried to carve out chances for the Hornets. 

João Pedro (7.5 /10): João Pedro scored the all-important equalizer, rose well to meet Kiko Femenía’s cross, and was thus rewarded for his patience and persistence. The Brazilin earned a well-deserved point for his club. 

Emmanuel Dennis (6/10): An ineffective outing for Emmanuel Denis, he failed to trouble Paul Dummett much, despite his best efforts. Was replaced late in the second half by Cucho Hernández. 

Substitutes:

Kiko Femenía (7.5/10): The Spaniard filled in well for Ngakia. He tried to shuttle up and down the flank. Delivered the assist, perfect weight on the ball as he helped his team get a point. Good substitution from Claudio Ranieri. 

Tom Cleverly (6.5/10): Tom Cleverly was subbed on in the 77th minute, he showed good determination and urgency as the Hornets rallied forward for an equalizer.
