MLB’s first World Series took place back in the 1900s as baseball is known as one of the oldest sports which took a franchise-based series turn. A total of 119 Finals have taken place in Major League Baseball’s history out of which 68 times the title is taken home by American League teams and 51 times National League teams emerged victorious.
The New York Yankees have earned a very different level of achievement when it comes to the number of World Series wins, they stand at an astounding 27 rings. Following the Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals have 11, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Boston Americans/Red Sox and the Athletics stand tall with 9 each.
Last season, the Texas Rangers‘ took their name out of this unwanted list as they emerged as 4-1 winners against the Arizona Diamondbacks. This now leaves five teams who are still yet to win it all in MLB. Let’s find out who they are.
Teams who have never won the World Series
San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres are one of the big names that have never tasted full victory. In their 54 years of existence have been to the World Series for two times. However, on both occasions in 1984 and 1998, they ended up losing.
In the recent years though, the Padres have been able to establish themselves as a contender to hold the title. With stars like Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Xander Bogaerts, they are hoping to challenge for the crown in 2024.
Tampa Bay Rays
The other MLB team to reach the World Series twice and never win it is the Tampa Bay Rays. Earlier known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the changed their names to simple ‘Rays’ in 2007. The change proved as a lucky change for them as they made it to the World Series in 2008 but were defeated.
In the recent years, the American League East side has emerged one of the top contenders. They made it all the way to the 2020 World Series but ended up falling short to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2023, they lost to the eventual winners Texas Rangers in the Wild Card round.
Milwaukee Brewers
Coming down to the teams who have only made one appearance in the showpiece event of baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers have been in the MLB for a long time but have failed to establish themselves as one of the best.
Their only appearance in their entire existence came in 1982 when they faced the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite having a 3-2 lead after Game 5, the Brewers were unable to shut their opponents down in the next two games and ended up losing the seven-game series 4-3.
Colorado Rockies
From an American League team to a National League team, the other team to have only made one Fall Classic trip are the Colorado Rockies. Starting as an expansion team in 1993, their solo appearance in the World Series came in 2007.
Unfortunately for them, they came up against a dominant Boston Red Sox side. The AL team would ran away with the title as they swept the Rockies 4-0. Most recently, they managed to earn a wild card spot in 2018 but have been at the bottom end since.
Seattle Mariners
The only current team in MLB who has never made it to the World Series are the Seattle Mariners. As a result of this, they obviously haven’t won it all yet.
In the 2001 season, the Seattle Mariners won a massive 116 games reaching the playoffs in style but lost out in the first round itself. The youthful team did manage to skip past their wild card spot in 2022 but ultimately ended up losing against the eventual champions Houston Astros.
