3 Notable free agents the Dallas Cowboys can target in 2022

Who can the Dallas Cowboys find in free agency?

The Dallas Cowboys had to endure another painful end to the 2021 NFL season. While throughout the year they looked like a real force, when it came to the playoffs, they faltered.

Still, there were positives to take from the season as their offense was clicking throughout and Dak Prescott didn’t seem to be hampered by last season’s injury. The hiring of Dan Quinn resulted in a significant improvement on the defensive side which was crucial in getting the team to be more competitive.

Now that the season is done, the Dallas Cowboys look to free agency and the draft to further improve their team to try and make a run at Super Bowl LVII. While the defense improved quite a lot this past year, there’s still room for improvement. Here are three free agents ranked in no particular order that the Dallas Cowboys can look to bring in to get back to winning ways.

#1: Stephon Gilmore, Cornerback

While the Dallas Cowboys defense significantly improved from 2020 to 2021, there is still room for further improvement. While the Cowboys knew how to take the ball away from opposing offenses, they gave up a lot of yards and didn’t exactly shut down offenses.

That’s where Stephon Gilmore comes in. Bringing in the 2018 defensive player of the year will give Dallas the ability to limit one half of the field as well as a turnover threat. Trevon Diggs was brilliant at taking the ball away but gave up far too many yards in the process. That won’t happen with Gilmore and he is more than capable of following a team’s #1 receiver across the field.

#2: Chandler Jones, Edge

The Los Angeles Rams proved that there really is no such thing as too many pass rushers. The pairing of Aaron Donald and Von Miller proved vital in Super Bowl LVI. If the Dallas Cowboys can bring in Chandler Jones, he’ll be lined up alongside Demarcus Lawerence and Randy Gregory.

While 5 of Chandler Jones’ 10.5 sacks came in the first game of the season, he still showed that he possesses an elite pass-rushing ability. While the Cowboys certainly didn’t struggle to rush the passer, adding another elite edge defender will make their secondary’s work even easier. If they get both Jones and Gilmore this spring, the Cowboys could be a real force in 2022.

#3: Russell Gage, Wide Receiver

Russell Gage had to step up this year for the Falcons. With Julio Jones leaving for the Titans and Calvin Ridley dealing with injury issues, Russell Gage was their main man. He definitely stepped up in a big way as he brought in 66 catches for 770 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s not meant to be a team’s number one option and he wouldn’t be in Dallas but he’ll produce behind Amari Cooper.

This pick is heavily dependent on what the Cowboys do in terms of Cedrick Wilson and Michael Gallup. While Gallup has stated his intent on staying in Dallas, the same can’t be said about Wilson. Russell Gage would be a solid #3 receiver and would come relatively cheap as well but it’s likely the Falcons will be keen to keep Gage in Atlanta.
