“Another Bucs star retires”: Ali Marpet decides to end his NFL career at 28

For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the last two seasons have been pretty impressive. They were the champions in the 2020 season and reached the playoffs this time around as well. However, Bucs fans were left dejected and disappointed when star QB Tom Brady recently announced his retirement from the game.

To add to the misery, another Bucs star has decided to end his career at a relatively young age. Ali Marpet, the left guard who helped protect Tom Brady during the Bucs’ Super Bowl title-winning season in 2020, has announced his retirement at the age of 28.

This was indeed an astonishing decision as Ali was named to the Pro Bowl last season. He took to Instagram on Sunday to inform the world about his decision. According to ESPN, the reason behind the sudden retirement decision is his health condition.

“After seven formidable years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I’ve come to the decision to retire from the game that has given me so much. This organization and the people surrounding it have helped not only fulfill a dream, but also helped build me into the person I am today,” Marpet wrote in his post.

“I’ve made Tampa Bay my home and I look forward to serving this community in the coming years. To the coaches and teammates, family and friends, an Instagram post simply can’t express the profound impact you’ve had on me. I’m eternally grateful. Thank you Tampa Bay,” he further wrote.

Marpet was set to take home another $20m in the coming two seasons. His career earnings stand around $37m. Talking about his son’s decision, Ali’s father told ESPN, “I think he accomplished his goals, values his health, is looking for more challenges. Ali has a very strong inner voice, and he is courageous enough to follow it. I’m in awe.”
