Finally, the Baker Mayfield-Cleveland Browns saga has come to a definite end. On July 6, 2022, The Carolina Panthers signed the former No.1 draft pick in exchange for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick. Mayfield faced questions about his future in the league after the Browns neglected to secure a trade for him in their pursuit of signing Deshaun Watson.
This drama began when the Browns’ management said during a press conference that they needed an “adult” at the quarterback position. This statement and Mayfield’s poor performance in the 2021 season led to the organization looking elsewhere for its QB1.

Baker Mayfield was on the receiving end of some heavy backlash after his terrible performance on the Christmas Day match against Green Bay Packers which the Browns lost by a close margin. Mayfield also received death threats after this game. The reason for his decline in productivity was his off-shoulder injury. Browns ended their season with an 8-9 record and thought they had given Mayfield enough chances to lead the team.
Teams in the league want immediate success from a No.1 pick. Before Baker Mayfield, the Cleveland Browns was the butt of all the jokes and called the worst team in all of sports by fans and critics alike. Since Baker started for the Browns, he ended the team’s 19-game winless streak and also led them to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and first playoff victory since 1994. After the Browns announced that they were signing Deshaun Watson, Mayfield said he felt “disrespected” over the team’s failure of efficient communication over the signing of the former Texans QB.
After suffering through months of hardships, Baker’s wife Emily is finally happy in a long time. After the Panthers announced the signing of her husband, Emily shared the news on Instagram that she was excited about the destination and as luck would have it the transaction happened on their anniversary.
“[O]n anniversary day too,” Emily Mayfield wrote in the caption, including an eyeballs emoji and blue and white hearts. “Love to see it!”. The coupled got married on July 6, 2019, and are currently celebrating three years of togetherness in the Bahamas. Last month Emily shared on Instagram about the difficulties the couple was facing and how they have stood strong together in these troubling times. “I’m a lucky girl. It’s been a weird, difficult season of growth; but I actually wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m learning a ton about myself, focusing on self-love, and diving deeper into why I am the way I am,” she wrote.
The best revenge for Baker Mayfield against the Cleveland Browns’ treatment of him over the past few months would be to destroy them in their Week 1 game. The Panthers and Browns are set to face off on September 11 and this game for sure will be the most streamed match of the season as everyone will look towards Mayfield to put the Browns in their place.
