“That’s a sore subject”: Bengals coach was really upset with Evan McPherson over Super Bowl halftime show
Evan McPherson
Evan McPherson has become a name to reckon with in the world of the NFL in a relatively short period of time. The supremely talented placekicker played college football at Florida before he was roped in by the Bengals in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
It would be fair to say that he well and truly surpassed expectations and had a stellar 2021 season. The Bengals made their way to the Super Bowl and whenever McPherson got the opportunity to contribute, he did so in some style. However, as it turns out, the Bengals’ coach wasn’t happy with Evan at the Super Bowl.
Simmons was uncharacteristically curt while talking about McPherson
Cincinnati Bengals’ assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons recently indicated that he was not pleased with the rookie kicker McPherson and long snapper Clark Harris as the two decided to stay on the bench to witness the Super Bowl 56 halftime show.
The show was a huge hit and we can understand that when stars like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar are performing, it is quite hard to stay away from all the action, however, as reported by Bengals.com’s Geoff Hobson, Simmons indicated that the two should have joined the rest of the team in the locker room.
“That’s a sore subject,” Simmons said when he was asked about Evan. As reported by Hobson, Simmons was “uncharacteristically curt” while talking about the subject. “That’s a real sore subject.” However, it would be fair to say that the whole scenario did not impact McPherson’s performance in the finale.
Evan made a 29-yard field goal in the first half and then went on to make a 38-yard field goal in the second one which allowed the Bengals to gain a 20-13 lead. Although the Bengals eventually ended up losing the finale, one has to admit that Evan was nothing short of sensational throughout the season.
