“Looking to save a few bucks”: Browns restructure Amari Cooper’s contract to create $15 million in cap room after offering a massive contract to Deshaun Watson

Amari Cooper

Amari Cooper is a name to reckon with in the world of the NFL. He earned a lot of praise during his college days for putting up incredible performances. As a result, he was roped in by the Oakland Raiders in 2015 but back in 2018, the Cowboys were able to add him to its impressive line-up.

However, recently it became apparent that Cooper’s association with the Cowboys was nearing its end. Not long ago, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the wide receiver is set to join the Cleveland Browns. In exchange, the Cowboys will get a 2022 fifth-round draft pick and a swap of 2022 sixth-rounders.

The Browns had a forgettable season last time around. So it was evident that they will look to make some drastic changes which is exactly what is happening. They recently offered a massive contract to star quarterback Deshaun Watson for a period of five years.

This also suggests that the Browns would now look to save some money. Taking a step in this direction, the Browns have restructured Amari Cooper’s contract. As per NFL media, the franchise converted most of Cooper’s $20 million base salary for the coming season into a signing bonus and added two more void years onto the end of his contract.

This will now allow the Browns to spread the cap hit over a period of five seasons. This will allow the team to save more than $15 million on the 2022 cap. It would be fair to say that the Browns went all in to get Deshaun and now they need to make some cuts.

In exchange for Deshaun, the Browns would have to send three first-round picks and two Day 3 picks to the Houston Texans. Moreover, Browns have given Deshaun a five-year, $230 million, fully-guaranteed contract, even when he is facing as many as 22 lawsuits of sexual misconduct.
