Who are Chase Young’s parents, Greg and Carla Young?

Chase Young, the star defensive end of the San Francisco 49ers, is one of the most exciting prospects in the league. The Ohio State Buckeyes star entered the NFL as the best overall prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft, selected by Washington Commanders. 

Young came under the spotlight after his startling rookie year, which got him the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. He also made the Pro Bowl for leading the league in rookies’ statistics, including sacks and forced fumbles. After three seasons with the Commanders, Young was traded to the 49ers last year in 2023.

And as they say, behind a good athlete, there’s a supportive family. Who are Chase Young’s parents? 

Born on April 14, 1999, Young grew up in a household deeply rooted in the commitment to service and sports. He was born to Greg Young and Carla Young, then residing in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Besides their son Chase, they also have a daughter named Weslie, who played basketball at her college, North Carolina Wesleyan. 

Given his family’s ingrained interest in sports, Young’s father used to play basketball during his college days at Bowie State University. As he graduated, he joined the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy Sheriff. While his mother works for the Office of Investigations for the United States Department of Transportation.

The 24-year-old defensive end started playing football at the very young age of 6, and since then, his mother, Carla has missed only one of his games. He shares a very loving and special bond with his mother, who can always be spotted during his games cheering for him as a proud mom.

She is married to Greg Young and currently works for the Office of Investigations for the United States Department of Transportation, an organization that deals with fraud and other crimes related to DOT. 

In an interview, Carla opened up about the bond she shares with her son, saying:

He’s like a protector. He always wants to protect like me and my daughter.

She taught her son to be compassionate, attentive and show love expressingly. Chase’s mother truly is his biggest fan and that’s why she’s the only one the Niners’ defensive end allows to wear his NFL Pro Bowl jersey. 

In addition to being his biggest cheerleader, Chase’s parents are also tough critics. In fact, the defensive end shared that the first seven games he played in the NFL were graded by her mother. Carla literally gave him a ‘C+’ as he couldn’t lead the league in sacks and told him:

Chase’s father, Greg Young, who himself is a sportsperson as he played basketball in his college days has been a major influence on his son’s life. He has worked with Chase on his skills ever since he was a little boy with an interest in football. When Chase was 10 years old, his father brought him an old lawnmower and broke apart its propel cord to give his son an illusion of American football and used to tell him to push it. 

He graduated from Bowie State University, right after which started working for the  Office of Investigations for the United States Department of Transportation as a deputy sheriff. After giving it more than two decades of his life, Greg is retired now.  As his 24-year-old son gained the NFL stardom quite young, Greg doesn’t like it when people tell him Chase got lucky. As he feels, Chase gained his success through hard work and dedication, and definitely not by having good luck. 

Greg said during his conversation with 7News sports anchor Olivia Garvey:

But for me, this is not a dream, we worked hard for this. People come up and say 'Man you all got lucky.' No, he's worked for this since he was a kid, no luck in this. All hard work, never giving up.

When Greg goes to his son’s game, he makes sure he sits away from the audience and the spots as he feels it’s his son’s moment and all attention should be on the football field.
