The Dallas Cowboys had yet another disappointing season after they lost at home to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round of the playoffs. The entire organization vowed to do better for the 2022 season but the team had no cap space to accommodate a superstar on their roster.

Former Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware tried to recruit 2x Super Bowl champion Von Miller to Dallas but his dream remained just that since the team was unable to pay Miller.

The Cowboys weren’t financially stable to afford Von Miller

DeMarcus Ware knew the Cowboys were in a dire need of another pass rusher to add to their existing roster and recommended his former Denver Broncos teammate Von Miller. However, the Bills saw a great opening and quickly rushed in to add another champion to their already iron-clad team. In March Miller signed with Buffalo to a six-year, $120 million deal with $51.4 million in guarantees. This was way too much for the Cowboys who had been suffering from cap issues at the beginning of the offseason.

“That was business because I remember when Von called me he said ‘Hey is Dallas interested? I’m a free agent,’ “ Ware said in recalling the conversation. “And I said, ‘What?! You’re a free agent, what do you mean you’re a free agent? I thought you had one more year?’ He was like, ‘No I’m done [with the Rams], bro.’ He said call Jerry [Jones] and them and see what they want to do.’ I said are you trying to get them to empty the bank account? What you trying to do?”

Ware dreamed of a three-headed monster pass rusher team starring DeMarcus Lawrence, Micah Parsons, and Von Miller which would be a nightmare for every QB in the league. “If they would have gotten Von here it would have been a guy that can play on the left side and the right side because [Lawrence], he plays on the left side the majority of the time but then you got Micah,” Ware said. “Micah is really good on the right side. So now you would have had that three-headed monster. Think about this: Von Miller. Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence. I don’t know who is coming. That’s what we still need. We still need that right defensive end or outside linebacker guy that can play a little bit interior. Can drop a little bit. That sack perennial athlete.”

The Cowboys re-signed defensive end Dorance Armstrong, signed Dante Fowler in free agency, and drafted Sam Williams in the second round of the 2022 draft. These will be the players joining Lawrence and Parsons in sending chills down the QB’s spine. While Ware tried to strengthen the Cowboys’ defense, the organization did the best with what they could afford. Still, the sight of Lawrence, Parsons, and Miller rushing from all sides to sack the QB would’ve been amazing to watch. Well, this was possible so let’s see how the Cowboys fare in the 2022 season.
