Here's why the Detroit Lions' alternate blue helmets are so special.

There has been something different about the Detroit Lions this entire season, the team has played at a high level consistently and is on its way to becoming the champion of the NFC North. Last night, however, the team looked different for another reason, the Lions debuted their brand new Honolulu Blue alternate helmets against the Las Vegas Raiders.
It was a great night for the Lions as the team looked great in their fresh helmets and they managed to end the night with a victory. The new helmets have a lot of meaning embedded into them, the design philosophy was not to create a helmet that was just aesthetically pleasing, it was to create a fine piece of art that could tell the story and history of the football club.
The new Honolulu blue helmets feature the team’s original logo(1961-69) on both sides of the helmet to pay homage to the team’s roots. Another fascinating aspect of this new helmet is that this particular shade of blue that covers the majority of the helmet has never been used by any other NFL team to date.
The Detroit Lions Honolulu Blue helmet should only be paired with their grey uniforms
On the top of the helmet is the number 90, this number is special to Detroit this season as 2023 is the 90th NFL season of the Lions. The helmet’s rails/facemasks are the same color as their signature grey uniforms. The shade of Detroit grey adds a nice touch to the overall blue theme of the helmet. The team had announced the new blue helmets as part of a uniform revamp ahead of the 2024 season.
The Detroit Lions’ blue helmet can only be worn by the team when they sport their Detroit grey jerseys and cannot be sported otherwise. The team will wear their new helmets once more this season when they take on the Minnesota Vikings on the 7th of January. The Lions have been accustomed to wearing silver helmets since 1934, they switched things up a bit between 1940-1950 but eventually reverted back to the silver helmets.
The Lions are now 1-0 when they wear their Honolulu blue helmets. Will this uniform remain a lucky charm for the team in the foreseeable future? It remains to be seen.
