The Detroit Lions play their first game of the postseason against the Washington Commanders at Ford Field to stand a chance to advance to their second conference game in history. The Detroit Lions finished the 2024 season as the table toppers in the NFC conference ahead of the Minnesota Vikings after a heated decider in the final week.
The Lions won 15 games in the season, losing once to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Buffalo Bills. The Lions coached by Dan Campbell have been on the offensive front of things all season and look to establish their dominance once more as they aim for historic records.
Although the Lions have four NFL Championships, they have not played a single Super Bowl before. There are only four teams, one from the NFC, who haven’t played the prestigious national championship game. Moreover, the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars are relatively new teams with very little experience in the league.
On the other hand, the Washington Commanders have broken an almost two-decade-long playoff win curse against their formidable postseason foes Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Commanders are headed to the Divisional Round after a thrilling 23-20 victory over the Buccaneers on Sunday night at Raymond James Stadium. The game was decided in the final moments when Zane Gonzalez drilled a 37-yard field goal, securing Washington’s first playoff win in 19 years.
This marks the fourth postseason meeting between Washington and Detroit. Washington previously defeated the Lions 27-13 in 2000, 41-10 in 1992, and 31-7 in 1983.
For long-time Lions’ fans, the 1992 defeat remains a painful memory, as it represented the closest Barry Sanders ever came to a Super Bowl appearance. Detroit’s impressive 1991 regular season, which culminated in their last playoff victory until last year, ended abruptly at RFK Stadium in a decisive loss to the then-Redskins.

Why can the Detroit Lions win?
Detroit features one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. While the Lions’ defense has been plagued by injuries, they have managed to contain opponents effectively enough to secure consistent wins.
To overcome Washington, Detroit will need a well-executed offensive game plan that emphasizes spreading the ball across multiple playmakers. Otherwise, the matchup could become another tightly contested game for the Commanders, potentially decided in the final moments. The Lions’ offensive success hinges heavily on quarterback Jared Goff, whose performance will be a critical factor in determining the outcome.
Jahmyr Gibbs has emerged as another standout performer since David Montgomery’s MCL injury sidelined him. In the midst of a sensational sophomore season, Gibbs has amassed 1,412 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 250 carries.
His versatility extends to the passing game, where he has recorded 52 receptions for 517 yards and four touchdowns. Sonic and knuckles together could be a force to reckon with but Gibbs on his own could become the ace up the sleeve on Saturday.
Why can the Washington Commanders win?
The Washington Commanders are no longer the disgraceful team that never made big waves. The new owner Josh Harris has changed the fortunes of the team and uplifted the spirits and support for the Commanders in Washington streets.
The upheaval including roping in Dan Quinn, naming Kliff Kingsbury as the offensive coordinator, making two big free agent signings in Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner. Finally, they drafted Jayden Daniels from LSU in the NFL Draft.
Jayden Daniels has been clutch performer for the Commanders since the beginning of the season. He went toe-to-toe with bigger names in the league, like Lamar Jackson at one point in the season. He shone brightly in his first ever playoff game when they needed him. Daniels had 304 total yards and two touchdowns. He also set the drive that led to the game-winning field goal.
The road to victory over the Lions isn’t easy despite them shrugging off the blanket case identity against the Bucs. They need to play a perfect game and do not keep things for the final play, which might not happen at all for them.
