The Detroit Lions play their first game of the postseason against the Washington Commanders at Ford Field to stand a chance to advance to their second conference game in history. The Detroit Lions finished the 2024 season as the table toppers in the NFC conference ahead of the Minnesota Vikings after a heated decider in the final week.

The game was decided in the final moments when Zane Gonzalez drilled a 37-yard field goal, securing Washington’s first playoff win in 19 years.
This marks the fourth postseason meeting between Washington and Detroit. Washington previously defeated the Lions 27-13 in 2000, 41-10 in 1992, and 31-7 in 1983.
For long-time Lions’ fans, the 1992 defeat remains a painful memory, as it represented the closest Barry Sanders ever came to a Super Bowl appearance. Why can the Detroit Lions win?

Jayden Daniels has been clutch performer for the Commanders since the beginning of the season. He went toe-to-toe with bigger names in the league, like Lamar Jackson at one point in the season. He shone brightly in his first ever playoff game when they needed him. Daniels had 304 total yards and two touchdowns. He also set the drive that led to the game-winning field goal.
The road to victory over the Lions isn’t easy despite them shrugging off the blanket case identity against the Bucs. They need to play a perfect game and do not keep things for the final play, which might not happen at all for them.
