Michael Oher and the Tuohy family are back in the news, almost a decade after the movie The Blind Side was released in theaters. The retired football player has brought forward some serious allegations against his adopted family.

Earlier this month, the former Baltimore Ravens tackle accused Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy of tricking him into signing a conservatorship instead of adoption papers. A 14-page lawsuit filed against the Tuohy family suggests that they convinced Oher to sign a document in 2004 that would make him a member of their family. It also revealed he filed a petition that would stop the Tuohys from using his name and earning revenue on his behalf, while he did not receive any for the 2009 movie.

Oher has requested that the court dismiss the conservatorship agreement. This will transfer all the legal rights to his name and likeness back to the 37-year-old. He revealed to the New York Post that the truth came as a shock.

How is Michael Oher connected to the movie The Blind Side?

Directed by John Lee Hancock, The Blind Side is the silver screen adaptation of a 2006 Michael Lewis novel of the same name. The story is based on the Tuohy family adopting a teenage Michael Oher, played by actor Quinton Aaron. Leigh Anne Tuohy, played by Sandra Bullock, came across a boy who was big considering his age. She noticed his athleticism and knack for football and later adopted him into her family.

The movie reportedly made over $300 million following its release. After Oher became a Tuohy, they sent him to study at Sean’s alma mater, the University of Mississippi. He enrolled in the Ole Miss football program and became an instant starter.

Oher graduated from college in 2009 and was announced for the draft. The Ravens selected him as their first-round pick. He was part of their 2013 Super Bowl-winning squad but was let go to the Tennessee Titans just a year later. However, injuries kept him from making any impact in the volunteer state, and he was released in 2015. A month after becoming a free agent, he signed with the Carolina Panthers and stuck around until 2017.

Does Michael Oher still talk to the Tuohy family?

Despite the recent allegations, the Tuohy family has been a constant supporter of Michael Oher. They were present throughout his NFL career, frequently attending Ravens games.

Oher has always been close to Colin Tuohy, his adopted sister. She was the one who helped with the adjustment process during the earlier years. He later became her escort when she was pronounced the high school homecoming queen.

Colin’s biological brother, Sean Tuohy Jr., grew close to Oher when he went to study at Loyola University, Maryland, for his bachelor’s degree in communications. They saw each other two to three times a week and occasionally played basketball together.

“We’ve always been close,” Michael Oher said about SJ. “We always played games together. He’s turned into a great guy.” Tuohy also revealed that his older brother was a massive influence while growing up. “The three things I took from Mike were that if you aren’t having fun doing what you’re doing, don’t do it,” he said.

So when Michael put forward the recent charges, Sean Tuohy expressed grief. “It’s upsetting to think we would make money off our children,” he told the Daily Memphian. “We’re going to love Michael at 37, just like we loved him at 16.”
