“It feels like a dream,” Los Angeles Rams safety Eric Weddle recollects his journey from retirement to Super Bowl success
Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl LVI, with a tremendous showing throughout the playoffs and the marquee clash against the Cincinnati Bengals. While the victory was sweet for the Rams, it probably felt a bit sweeter for their veteran safety, Eric Weddle for whom the last few weeks felt like a dream come true.
The 37-year old Eric Weddle, returned from retirement only in January after it emerged that the Rams had lost safety Jordan Fuller for the remainder of the season, and Taylor Rapp had suffered a concussion. Weddle had announced his retirement from the NFL in 2020 after a single season with the Rams.

However, he has had a superb return to the game, after coming out of retirement to help the Rams through their Super Bowl journey and win his first Super Bowl. It was almost a fairytale of sorts for Eric Weddle, given the fact that his Super Bowl title came after his decision to retire from the game.
“It’s hard to think back where I was five-and-a-half weeks ago and being able to do what I did,” Weddle told NFL Network. “It feels like a dream, that I left my real life for five-and-a-half weeks and now I’m back in the real-life, only to be reminded by my pec that isn’t there and getting fixed tomorrow.”
Eric Weddle said, that the past five weeks have almost felt like an escape from reality, and now gradually he is returning to his normal life, where he does not have to take the pitch anymore. He made a key contribution for the Rams during his return match against the San Francisco 49ers, wherein he made 9 tackles to seal the game for the Rams.
“I’m probably just most proud of being in the moment and, whatever my role was, just trying to help the guys and be a kid again,” Weddle said.
“To come out of retirement for two years and join a team and welcome me in and be excited that I was there and know that I could bring some energy, bring some passion, and bring whatever that it factor was to a team that was on the cusp of something great. All the stuff on the field, the mental side, all that stuff, I’ve done all that and I just think the whole story of coming back and making an impact in a lot of guys’ lives probably means the most to me.”
For Eric Weddle, however, the Super Bowl victory night ended on a personal sour night, as he suffered a pectoral muscle tear, but continued to play on despite the pain and realised the dream of winning the Super Bowl, one which every NFL player has since their college days.
