“Evan McPherson is unbelievable,” Joe Burrow in awe of rookie kicker’s swagger after victory against Titans
The Cincinnati Bengals pulled off one of the biggest heists of their history after they secured a 19-16 victory over the top-seeded Tennesse Titans in the divisional final playoff tie. The victory meant the Bengals will now play their first AFC championship match since the 1988/89 season.
A thrilling contest between the two sides was settled with literally the final kick of the game when Bengals’ rookie kicker Evan McPherson, pulled off something out of the hat to send his side into a state of total euphoria. He calmly put a 52-yard kick right through the uprights to give them the winning points.
Evan McPherson scored a 52-year kick to give Bengals the victory against the Titans
However, that was probably not the most heroic thing Evan McPherson had done all evening, as it later emerged when Bengals QB Joe Burrow revealed an interesting factoid about the rookie kicker.
Speaking in a post-match press conference, Burrow revealed that McPherson was very confident of Bengals winning the tie and had also predicted the same to backup QB Brandon Allen, before even coming onto the field. Needless to say, Burrow was stunned with this amount of confidence and self-belief that the 22-year old carries with himself.
“That guy is unbelievable,” Burrow said. “So, he was talking to Brandon as he was going out to kick, give[s] a little warm-up swing, and he said, ‘Looks like we’re going to the AFC championship,’” finished off Burrow while laughing out loud in the press meet.
The Cincinnati Bengals will hope that some of McPherson’s self-belief and positive vibes rub off on the others as well, when they face their next challenge, in what would be a monumental game for them. The Bengals will take on the winners of the fixture between Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, both of whom are among the in-form teams in the division.
