It took the NFL nine days to decide whether to fine Nick Bosa for wearing a MAGA hat on game day. The verdict comes just one day before the San Francisco 49ers fly to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
On October 27th, the 49ers defeated the Dallas Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium. After the final whistle, the NBC crew interviewed 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Isaac Gurendo when Bosa barged in wearing a MAGA hat to show support for Donald Trump‘s candidacy.
Throughout this past week, reporters asked several in the 49ers facility about how they viewed Bosa’s behavior. No one came forward with an answer. When the reporters asked the All-Pro pass rusher, he simply ignored them.
Bosa was already under fire for his actions, but his silence afterward created further outrage on social media. Most wanted a similar punishment to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
A few days later, Trump defeated Kamala Harris and became the 47th President of the United States of America. Reporters flocked around Bosa for a reaction, and he finally opened his mouth and claimed it was worth it.
Yet there was still an outside chance of the league penalizing the former defensive player of the year. On Saturday, November 9th, the NFL committee finally announced its verdict. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the league imposed an $11,255 fine for wearing the MAGA hat.

Why did the NFL fine Nick Bosa?
The league always encourages the players to express their best on the football field, but above all else, prefers they keep personal and political views away from it.
This not only includes proper decorum but also keeping the sanctity of the sport itself. Bosa, by wearing the MAGA hat, broke several rules. Schefter further revealed the section and the article that the league cited to punish him.
Per the NFL: Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 of the NFL rulebook states that “throughout the period on game-day that a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including in pregame warm-ups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages either in writing or illustration unless such message has been approved in advance by the League office.

So, if Bosa had taken permission prior to his on-field Trump display, then perhaps the league would not have interfered. However, there’s less than a ten percent chance the league would even allow Bosa to wear it.
