The NFL levied a hefty fine on Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. It comes right before his much-anticipated return to New York to play the Giants on Sunday.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Barkley’s first-quarter helmet-on-helmet action in their Week 6 fixture against the Cleveland Browns was deemed a punishable offense even though the on-field referees did not penalize on the spot.
While backed up at their 11–yard line, quarterback Jalen Hurts handed the ball over to Barkley, who juked one Browns player and then bounced off another one before lowering his head, which connected with defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II. The Browns players converged on the Pro Bowl rushers, bringing him down short of a first down.
The 27-year-old finished the game with 47 rushing yards on 18 carries and two seven-yard receptions for seven yards. He had a strong start to life in Philly, carrying the ball 91 times for 482 yards and four touchdowns and catching 14 passes for 92 yards and a score.

On Saturday, the league committee adjudged the tackle as a punishable offense and fined Saquon Barkley $45,020. He joined CJ Gardner-Johnson and Nakobe Dean on the list of Eagles players fined for various on-field infringements.
However, it’s not even close to being the most a player has had to pay this season. Chargers Derwin James was slapped with $708,333 and a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Former player hints at the reception Saquon Barkley may receive on his return to New York
Ever since Barkley jumped ship and joined the Giants’ bitter rivals, the Eagles, the New York faithful have gone to lengths to make their feelings be heard by criticizing the move. Barkley’s predecessor and Giants’ great Tiki Barber were no different, as he wasn’t pleased with the decision either.
Barber was recently asked about the mood among the fans regarding the return of the Penn State graduate to MetLife Stadium.
Barkley played 74 games for the Giants and recorded 1201 carries for 5211 yards and 35 rushing touchdowns, along with 288 receptions for 2100 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He signed a three-year $37.75 million deal with the Eagles, of which $26 million is guaranteed and could increase to $46.75 million with bonuses.
