Steve White was battling cancer for eight years

Steve White was selected in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles wanted him to play as a linebacker but eventually cut him before the start of the 1996 season and Tampa Bay signed White to their practice squad the same year. During his first three seasons in Tampa, White was a backup and played his first game in 1999. During his seven-year stint in the league, White had 119 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
The Bucs organization was saddened by the news of White’s demise and issued a statement, “We are saddened to hear of the passing of Steve White after his courageous battle with cancer. Steve was an impactful and respected member of the Buccaneers’ vaunted defenses over six seasons and continued to connect with fans as part of the Tampa Bay community following his playing career.”
Earlier this year in April, Steve White revealed on social media that he has been battling chronic lymphocytic leukemia for the past eight years. After announcing his retirement from NFL, White went on to be an assistant coach for the University of South Florida for a year and then turned into a writer for SB Nation.
