Smith was born and raised in a family of athletes in Georgia, with the intention of one day becoming one of them. He won many football titles during his school years, which was the entry point into a career in his favorite sport. Smith eventually decided to attend West Virginia University, where he majored in English.

Geno Smith improved his stats drastically as a football player from his freshman to senior years of college, and in 2013, he decided that he wanted to enter the NFL draft.

In 2013, the New York Jets selected Smith as the 39th pick and signed him for four years. Against the Detroit Lions, he made his debut, completing 6/7 passes for 47 yards. His four seasons with the team were spent learning and practicing for the upcoming games.

Smith became the first Black quarterback to be selected as a starter for the New York Giants later on. He was signed by the Los Angeles Rams for a year in 2018 and played relief roles for the rest of the season. In 2019, he was further signed by the Seattle Seahawks, and an extension was signed in 2022 by Geno Smith.

The first professional contract Geno Smith signed was his four-year contract with the New York Jets, earning him an average salary of $1,254,901 and covering his signing bonus of $2,030,620. He signed his second one-year, $1,200,000-per-year contract with the Giants.

The Rams also signed a one-year contract with Smith, giving him $1,000,000 and a $200,000 signing bonus. This was his third big deal.

Smith was selected by the Seattle Seahawks, who signed him for three years and paid him $895,000. The team paid $1,187,500 for the 2020 season, $1,212,500 for the 2021 season, and $3,500,000 for the 2022 season, all of which included a $500,000 signing bonus.
