“There’s a Pro Bowl player at every position,” Gus Bradley pinpoints his new challenges as defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have hired a new defensive coordinator in the form of Gus Bradley, who will take over the role from Matt Eberflus after he made the move to the Chicago Bears last month. Bradley is one of the most highly regarded defensive coordinators in the NFL and also has experience of working as the head coach for 4 years in the past.

However, with the Indianapolis Colts, it will be a new challenge altogether for the 55-year old who will look to help them to the playoffs stages this season. The Colts failed to qualify for the playoffs this year, despite having one of the best defences in the league.

Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, linebacker Darius Leonard and cornerback Kenny Moore II all made the Pro Bowl this season as part of a defensive unit that finished the season tied for ninth in points allowed at 21.5 points per game. Now, Gus Bradley knows the challenge that is in front of him when he signed for the new role at Indianapolis Colts.

“The truth of the matter is there’s a Pro Bowl player at every position group – the D-Line, the linebackers and the DBs,” Gus Bradley said. “When you have that, it takes a skillset, a presence, hard work and a mentality to reach that level. And to have that at each position group is unique to walk into a situation like that.”

“We want an effort-based defense,” Gus Bradley continued in his assessment of the Colts defensive goals ahead of the new season. “We want great enthusiasm, which I think is important on the field. Great energy, great toughness — mentally and physically tough — and the final thing is a defense that plays smart, makes good decisions. It’s play fast and ball out. It’s not complicated.”
