Mark Murphy and Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers may part ways prior to the 2022 NFL season. After the drama of the last offseason, with Rodgers expressing his discontent with the team and his desire to leave, a basic agreement was reached between the two parties.

The understanding was that Rodgers would stay with the team in 2021 and give one last shot at the Super Bowl. If he were to win it, then there’s clearly no reason to leave. However, if the team failed to win, then Rodgers would pack his bags.

Given the Packers’ divisional-round loss to the 49ers, the general thought is that Rodgers is on his way out of Green Bay. However, for much of the season, the Packers were the best team in the league and were certainly a better team than the 49ers. They just didn’t play to their capabilities and Rodgers in particular played quite poorly.

With the poor performance being the reason for the Packers’ most recent playoff failure, many have begun to wonder if Rodgers moving on from Green Bay would be beneficial for him. Packers CEO, Mark Murphy certainly thinks so.

In a recent interview, Packers CEO Mark Murphy was quoted saying “We are significantly over the salary cap for next year, and will have to make many difficult decisions in order to get under the cap. A key factor will be where Aaron Rodgers comes back for the 2022 season.”

About Rodgers, Murphy said “Matt(Lafleur), Brian(Gutekunst), Russ Ball and I are all in agreement that we want Aaron to come back. He is likely to win his fourth league MVP, is the unquestioned leader of our team, and is still playing at a high level at 38.”

The salary cap issues that the Packers have could be a major factor in Rodgers’ decision. If the 2022 Packers team doesn’t provide a real shot at the Super Bowl, it’s very likely that he will look to get himself traded somewhere else. However, if they can dodge the issues, then it’s possible Rodgers will stick around for at least another season.

It will be an extremely difficult situation for the Packers regardless of what Aaron Rodgers chooses. On the one hand, they could be without their star quarterback and on the other, if they keep him around, they may not be able to be as strong a team as this past season.
