Former NFL running back Alex Collins passed away on Sunday night in a tragic motorcycle accident in Broward County, Florida. The ex-Ravens player was only 28 years old at the time of his death. The entire sporting world has been shaken to the core with grief upon Collins’ untimely death.

Originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2016 NFL draft, Alex Collins played for three franchises in his professional career. Collins had most recently signed with the Memphis Showboats of the USFL on January 17, 2023.

Now the 28-year-old has passed away in a most gruesome motorcycle accident that has left fans and fellow athletes in shock. The collision that took his life occurred at Lauderdale Lakes in Florida while he was on his motorcycle which hit another vehicle.

How did the accident take place?

The unfortunate incident took place on Sunday night, August 13, when Collins went biking in Broward County, Florida. He was riding his 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600K which collided with a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban SUV coming from the opposite direction. 

At some point, the Chevrolet driver proceeded to turn left to travel south onto Northwest 33rd Avenue. As the car crossed the eastbound lanes, the motorcycle struck the rear passenger side of the SUV”, briefed the authorities. 

The impact caused the motorcyclist to enter the rear passenger side window of the Chevrolet and come to a final rest inside the car. The collision also caused the Chevrolet to rotate clockwise before finally resting,” the final report said.

Ravens head coach John Harabaugh shares heartfelt statement following Alex Collins’ death

Despite being waived in 2019, Alex Collins had played two seasons for the Baltimore Ravens. Following the tragic incident, John Harbaugh, current head coach of the Baltimore Ravens shared a heartfelt statement in memory of Collins.

Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly,” Harbaugh said in the statement. “I’ll always remember him for being a great teammate who had an uplifting spirit that impacted everyone he encountered.”

“He was also a smart player who ran with unlimited determination, and he contributed to a lot of our success during his time in Baltimore. We send our heartfelt condolences and support to Alex’s family. May he now rest in God’s eternal peace.”

Collins had been in a car crash before, was arrested on drug charges

The late NFL professional had previously been in a car crash back in 2019 and was arrested on alleged possession of marijuana, and a handgun. Although he insisted the marijuana belonged to his friend who forgot it in his car, Collins was duly waived from the Ravens’ roster the very season. 

He received an 18-month long unsupervised probation as court sentence and was suspended from the league for three weeks. Despite his untimely death, Alex Collins will be remembered as a talented athlete in his position by fans and fellow teammates.
