How many Super Bowls have the Atlanta Falcons won?

The Atlanta Falcons are a professional American football team based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in the year 1965, they joined the NFL the following year as an expansion team. They did so after the NFL offered then-owner, Rankin Smith, a franchise to keep him from joining the rival American Football League.

The Falcons struggled in their early years of existence. They only had two winning seasons in their first 12 years. The Falcons qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 1978 and won their Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles, 14-13. However, they failed to go any further that season as they lost their Divisional Round matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, 27-20.

He played four seasons with the Falcons, breaking and setting numerous records along the way. “Prime Time” as he was affectionately known, brought a lot of relevance and attention to the Falcons during that time.

The Falcons had one of their greatest seasons in 1998. Under recently acquired head coach Dan Reeves, QB Chris Chandler and running back Jamal Anderson, the ‘Dirty Bird’ Falcons posted a franchise-best 14-2 record. They won their division that year and went all the way to the Super Bowl. However, they faced disappointment in the title game as they were blown away by the champions Denver Broncos.

In the 2000s, the Falcons enjoyed some successful years. They have been to the playoffs 8 times in the 21st century and have won their division four times. They appeared in the Super Bowl in 2016, but faced disappointment once again, this time by blowing a 25-point lead against the New England Patriots. The Falcons that season had the league MVP in QB Matt Ryan.

How many Super Bowl titles do the Atlanta Falcons have?

The Atlanta Falcons have yet to win a Super Bowl title in their 55-year history. They have been to the Super Bowl twice so far. Their first appearance came in 1998 against the Denver Broncos, where they lost 34-19. Their second bout with the Super Bowl happened in 2016 where they infamously blew a 25-point lead against the New England Patriots enroute to a crushing 34-28 defeat. They have a 0-2 record in the title games so far.

Super Bowl XXXIII

The Atlanta Falcons’ first tryst with the Super Bowl came in 1998. Super Bowl XXXIII that year was played at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida. The Falcons came into the title game with a record of 14-2. Their opponents were the defending Super Bowl champions, the Denver Broncos who brought their own 14-2 record to the Super Bowl.

The Broncos came out of the gate swinging. Thanks to a John Elway to Rod Smith, 80-yard touchdown pass, the Broncos took an early 17-3 and never relinquished it. In his final game as an NFL player, Broncos’ QB John Elway threw for 336 yards, one touchdown and one interception and led his team to victory. At 38 years old, Elway became the oldest player to win Super Bowl MVP, a record that was later broken by Tom Brady in 2017, coincidentally against the Falcons.

Super Bowl LI

Super Bowl LI was a historic event. The Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots played, arguably, the greatest Super Bowl of all time. The Falcons came into the game with a record of 11-5 and the league MVP Matt Ryan. The Patriots on the other hand had a league-best record of 14-2. This was the Falcons’ second Super Bowl appearance, whereas the Patriots came into their ninth Super Bowl, setting a record in the process.

Midway through the third period, the Falcons had a lead of 25 points. It was all set for Atlanta to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. However, Tom Brady and the Patriots had other ideas. New England pulled off an incredible comeback, rallying to score 25 unanswered points to tie the game. In overtime, the Patriots got the ball first, and the writing was on the wall for the Falcons. Brady led the Patriots on game-winning drive in overtime to seal a historic win. Brady became the oldest quarterback to win Super Bowl MVP, at 39. He finished the game with 466 passing yards and 2 touchdowns.
