The American professional football team, Chicago Bears is part of the National Football Conference. It’s counted among the most successful franchises in the NFL, that have won eight NFL championships and one Super Bowl title. The franchise was established in 1920 and was founded by a prominent businessman A.E. Staley. He named the franchise as the “Decatur (Illinois) Staleys.

George Halas became the player-coach of the team. He then relocated it to Chicago, in 1921 as Staley handed him over the franchise. He coached them until 1968 and was known as “Papa Bear.” After relocating to Chicago, the team won their first-ever American Professional Football Association (APEA) championship. They were then renamed as “Chicago Bears,” in 1922, the very same year the APEA became the NFL.

In their early years in the NFL, the Bears developed quite a famous rivalry with the Green Bay Packers, which was later known to be one of the greatest feud stories in sports. In 1932 and 1933, with a dominant rushing attack with Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski, who went on to become Hall of Famers, the Bears landed their first playoff game victory at a 9-0 against Portsmouth Spartans.

In the 40s, the Bears won four more championships– 1940, 1941, 1943, and 1946, led by quarterback Sid Luckman, a future Hall of Famer. Moving forward, after winning another title in 1963, the franchise drafted two all-time great players, linebacker Dick Butkus and running back Gale Sayers. However, they couldn’t take the team to the playoffs throughout their career.

That playoff drought finally ended in 1975, when the Bears drafted running back Walter Payton, who began a dominating era for the Bears. With him, the team went on to win four divisional titles and their first-ever Super Bowl title in 1985.

The Bears experienced little success from the mid-90s to the early 2000s. The team finally returned to the Super Bowl in 2007 but had to accept defeat at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts. After the 2010 regular season, the Bears returned back to the NFC championship, after defeating their long-time rivals the Packers. The following four seasons, the team struggled to make the playoffs, and in 2013 and 2014, they finally reached the nadir where they prided themselves as “Monsters of the Midway” defensive reputation.

After an example season of 15 wins, the Chicago Bears hosted the Patriots in New Orleans, Louisiana, in January 1986.
