Counted among the most famous teams in the league, Detroit Lions is the American football team based in Detroit. The franchise has been in play for nearly a century and was founded in 1930. As being one of the only two small-town members in the pre-Super Bowl NFL besides the Green Bay Packers, they were called the Spartans. The franchise was sold in 1934, and they relocated to Detroit, from where they got the name ‘Lions’ inspired by baseball’s Detroit Tigers. In the first season with the Lions, the franchise established a long-standing tradition of scheduling a game on Thanksgiving. Ever since then, they have been featuring the home game every year.
The Lions brought home their first NFL championship that season. They proceeded to win three more NFL championships in 1952, 1953, and 1956. Then came the AFC-NFC merger and the Lions began falling apart. From 1958 to 1981, they barely qualified for one playoff, but they were far from terrible. In most of the games, they were stuck with mediocrity at a .500 finishing record.
By the late 1980s, the Lions hit a jackpot by hiring Barry Sanders, with whom they proceeded to win Pro Bowl honours in all 10 seasons, across the league. Then in 1991, they lost to the Redskins in the NFC Championship game, the Lions made four more playoff appearances during the period from 1992 to 1997.
Moving forward, after 12 years of playoff drought, the Lions finally qualified for their playoff appearance in 2011. However things didn’t go as planned, and for the next two years, they never made it to the playoffs. So far, the Detroit Lions have neither made it to the Super Bowl nor the trophy. For the playoffs, they have a 7 wins and 13 losses record, with four NFL Championship titles.
