The Las Vegas Raiders had been in a slump since Derek Carr was named as their starter in 2014. Since then, the Raiders have made it to the playoffs only twice, and both encounters resulted in a loss in the wild-card round itself. After the poor 6-9 start in the 2022 season, the Raiders benched Carr and after the end of the regular season; the Raiders announced they were parting ways with Carr.
Following Carr’s departure, it was a no-brainer for the Raiders to select veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as their new signal-caller. Jimmy G is familiar with Las Vegas’ head coach Josh McDaniels, as both spent four years together in New England.
The Raiders signed him to a three-year $72.75 million, including $34 million fully guaranteed. Jimmy G was elated to be in Las Vegas and when asked if the team was on his list of potential landing spots in free agency, he said, “Oh yeah. Right off the bat actually, one of my agents gave me the first list of teams. Raiders were right up there. I have the familiarity with Josh, Dave (Ziegler) – the [general manager]. All that played a role.”
Jimmy Garoppolo has been in the league for nine years now and played with two different teams, making the Raiders his third. Apart from his relationship with head coach McDaniels, the Raiders must have selected him for a reason. The exact same reason why teams look for a quarterback, — Super Bowl. Let’s find out if he has played in a Super Bowl and won a Lombardi Trophy or not.

Super Bowls that Jimmy Garoppolo has played
Jimmy Garoppolo has played in one Super Bowl in his decade-long career. The 31-year-old played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2022 and during his tenure led them to Super Bowl LIV. Garoppolo rallied the 49ers in 2019 to the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs and played a good game. The 49ers were up by 10 points with seven minutes left in regulation. Unfortunately, the Chiefs scored 21 points in five minutes to snatch the Lombardi Trophy from San Fran’s hands.
Despite playing in just one Super Bowl and losing it, Jimmy Garoppolo actually has two Super Bowl rings to his name. That’s right! Before joining the 49ers, Jimmy G was with the Patriots. New England drafted him into the league in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. He served as a backup to Tom Brady for four years and played in a few games as a relief.
In his rookie season, the Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX against the Seahawks and Jimmy G was instrumental in helping the defense prepare for Russell Wilson. In 2016, he was named the starter as Brady was suspended by the NFL for the Deflategate controversy. Garoppolo started in two games and won both matchups. The same year, the Patriots won the iconic Super Bowl LI with a 28-3 comeback made by Brady, which was also the first Super Bowl in history to go into overtime. Everyone on the Patriots roster played a snap in that Super Bowl, except Jimmy G since he was injured. But he did take home a Super Bowl ring.
Jimmy Garoppolo has had a better career as a backup than other quarterbacks who have been in the league for more than a decade. The 2013 Walter Payton Man of the Year has played in just one Super Bowl and has two Super Bowl wins as a backup with the Patriots, without playing a single snap. Isn’t it awesome? Let’s see if Jimmy G is able to lead the Raiders to the Super Bowl or not!
