Houston Texans is a team that was established over three decades after the AFC-NFC merger. It’s a Houston-based American football team and a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division.
Although the Texans were established in 1999, they didn’t start playing until 2002. They are a relatively new NFL team, yet one of the most famous ones. It is currently owned by Janice McNair, who received the majority of ownership after the death of her husband Bob McNair, in 2018. In their initial days, the Texans struggled a lot and didn’t see much hope for the team until 2010– winning their first division championship and paving their way up to their first playoff berth.
The Texans were mainly established as a replacement for Houston’s previous NFL team, Houston Oiler (1960-1996). Oiler then moved to Nashville, where they became the Tennessee Titans, that fans know today.
Being the youngest franchise in the NFL, the Texans haven’t yet reached the Super Bowl as they have been playing for just 24 years. The team began improving when the Texans hired Gary Kubiak as the head coach in 2006. In the 2007 season, Houston logged the record of finishing with a .500 (8-8), and with the 9-7 result in 2009, they were close to qualifying for the 2009-10 playoffs.
As the 2011 NFL draft came, so did the defensive end J.J. Watt in the 11th over pick. Following that, former Cowboys HC Wade Phillips joined as the defensive coordinator for Houston. There began a new era for the Texans. As the team’s defense improved to 10-6, Houston won their first-ever AFC South title.
They then beat off the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the 2012 playoffs following a divisional-round win over the Ravens. They proceeded to win three more AFC South titles. In their 24 years of playing in the NFL, the Texans have made 10 playoff appearances and won 4 of them.
