The New York Giants are the only surviving franchise that still exists after joining the NFL in 1925. They are the oldest franchise in the Northeastern United States. Founded in the year 1925 by Tim Mara, the team is still owned by the Mara family to this day. The Giants are one of the more successful teams in the league with four NFL Championships pre-Super Bowl era and four since the inception of the Super Bowl.

The Giants had a baseball team with the same name and, to distinguish themselves from that team, they were incorporated as the “New York National League Football Company, Inc.” in 1929. It was then changed to the “New York Football Giants Inc.” in 1937. The baseball relocated to San Francisco in 1957, but the football team stayed in New York and continues to use the New York Football Giants moniker to date.

The Giants had success early in their career. They won three championships in the span of 11 years. Their first bout with the championship came in 1927. After a seven-period gap, they won their second and third championships in the span of four years. Their last pre-Super Bowl title came in the year 1956. They rank third among active franchises with the most championships in NFL history.

Although the Giants haven’t enjoyed a dynastic run of winning championships, they have eight championships to their name. Their Super Bowl triumphs came in the span of two decades. The Giants’ first couple of Super Bowl titles came in 1986 and 1990, respectively. After that, the franchise went through a bit of a drought but won their next two titles in 2007 and 2011.

The Giants boast the second-most Pro Football Hall of Famers in the NFL with 29. Michael Strahan is the latest Giant to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014. Tim Mara, the founder of the Giants, was one of the original inductees into the Hall in 1963. Numerous Hall of Famers have been associated with the franchise at some point but were inducted due to their stellar careers with other teams.

The New York Giants have won four Super Bowl titles, however, they have four NFL Championships to their name as well. Their first Super Bowl came in 1986, where they defeated the Denver Broncos 39-20. Their next title came in 1990, a close victory against the Buffalo Bills. 1986: Super Bowl XXI

The New York Giants squared off against the Denver Broncos at Rose Bowl, Pasadena in Super Bowl XXI. The Broncos had a stellar defense that year and future Hall of Famer John Elway at quarterback. It was a tough team to beat. They came into the game with an 11-5 record. The Giants, on the other hand, were led by QB Phil Simms and their “Big Blue Wrecking Crew” defense. They had a regular season record of 14-2.

1990: Super Bowl XXV

Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida was the venue for Super Bowl XXV. And what a Super Bowl it was! The Buffalo Bills came into the game with their explosive no-huddle offense after finishing the regular season with a record of 13-3. The New York Giants had a stout defense, allowing a league-low 211 points that season. They also had a record of 13-3.

This game is widely regarded as one of the best Super Bowls in the history of the NFL. It is known for Bills placekicker, Scott Norwood‘s last-second missed field goal. That kick went wide right of the uprights. The missed kick also started the Bills’ infamous run of four straight Super Bowl losses.

The Giants overcame a 12-3 early deficit to win the game by one point. It is the only Super Bowl decided by a margin of one point. Giants RB Ottis Anderson was named the Super Bowl MVP for carrying the ball 21 times for 102 yards and one touchdown.

2007: Super Bowl XLII

This might be the New York Giants’ greatest Super Bowl victory to date. They were never supposed to win this Super Bowl. No one gave them a chance. They were going up against a New England Patriots team that was playing for an undefeated record that season.

They came into the game with a perfect 16-0 regular season record. The Giants, on the other hand, sneaked into the playoffs with a 10-6 record. This was David vs. Goliath if ever there was one!

The Giants were trailing 14-10 with 2:39 left in the game when they started their game-winning drive on their own 17-yard line. What followed left every spectator’s jaw on the floor.

In the game’s, or perhaps the NFL history’s, most memorable play, receiver David Tyree caught a pass from QB Eli Manning on his helmet, using only one of his hands, for a 3rd down conversion. That catch is regarded as the greatest play in Super Bowl history as the Giants completed the drive with a touchdown. Manning was named Super Bowl MVP for his 255 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception performance.

2011: Super Bowl XLVI

This was a rematch of Super Bowl XLII. The New England Patriots entered the game seeking their fourth Super Bowl. They had a record of 13-3 and were the favorites again, just like in 2007, to win the title. The Giants crawled into the Super Bowl with a record of 9-7. In a previous meeting between these two teams that season, the Giants won the game 24-20 on the road.

The Patriots scored 17 unanswered points after the Giants took a 9-point first-quarter lead. However, the Giants roared back and capped off the night with an 88-yard game-winning drive orchestrated by QB Eli Manning. The drive ended in a Ahmad Bradshaw 6-yard game-winning touchdown with 57 seconds left in the game. Manning was again named the Super Bowl MVP for completing  30 of 40 passes for 296 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.
