They played their first season in 1960 as a member of the American Football League, commonly known as AFL. They won their first two AFL Championships along with four divisional titles. They became a part of the NFL in 1970 during the AFL-NFL merger.

The Oilers enjoyed early success in the NFL, making the playoffs from 1978-1980 and then from 1987-1993. However, the Super Bowl was still out of their grasp. The Oilers relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1997. They played one season at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis due to the construction of their own stadium in Tennessee.

They played as the Tennessee Oilers for a couple of seasons but changed their name to the Tennessee Titans in 1999. They reached the Super Bowl that season but failed to lift the title. The Titans made the playoffs in all but one season from 1999 to 2003. However, since then, the Titans only made the playoffs twice in the next 13 years.
