The American football team Indianapolis Colts is prominently known for winning two Super Bowl trophies. It’s a part of the American Football Conference (AFC) and was originally known as the Baltimore (Maryland) Colts. The franchise was established after the dissolution of the Dallas Texans NFL team in 1953.
In 1954, the Colts hired head coach Weeb Ewbank, who went on to become a Hall of Famer, along with Johnny Unitas who went on to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. With him and three more future Hall of Famers — Jim Parker as tackle, Raymond Berry as tight end, and Lenny Moore as halfback. As the offense led by them, the team defeated the New York Giants by 23-17 in the NFL championship game.
The following season, the Colts again scored victory in the NFL championship by again defeating the Giants. Later in 1969, the Colts achieved another grand title game when they faced off against the AFL champions New York Jets in the Super Bowl III. However, they couldn’t claim the trophy.
After the mega-merger of AFL-NFL, the Colts again appeared in the Super Bowl in 1971, against the Dallas Cowboys. They won their first-ever Super Bowl trophy by 16-13. A couple of years later, in 1973, Unitas retired and the team had to face many mediocre seasons with no playoff wins, let alone Super Bowls.
In the 80s, the Colts relocated to Indianapolis as they were unable to gain funds from the local government for a new stadium. There also, the team struggled for some teams as they qualified for the postseason play only once in 11 seasons. In 1998, the team drafted QB Peyton Manning who led the team to form the best offenses in the league, by teaming up with wide receiver Marvin Harrison and running back Edgerrim James in the early 2000s.
The team returned to the Super Bowl in 2007 and scored the victory by defeating the Chicago Bears. In 2009, the team earned the AFC’s top seed in the playoffs by winning 14 games. But they lost the Super Bowl game against the New Orleans Saints. In the seven decades of existence, the Colts have appeared in the Super Bowl four times, in which they have won two times. Super Bowl V is based in Baltimore and Super Bowl XLI when shifted to Indianapolis.
