The Kansas City Chiefs, the NFL’s modern dynasty, have been at the top of the football world since a certain Patrick Mahomes took over at QB. It is also one of the most storied franchises in the league’s history. Founded in 1959 by Lamar Hunt, the Chiefs won three AFL Championships in the 60s. They were the second team, after the New York Jets to beat an NFL team in the AFL-NFL Championship game. They got better of the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Chiefs though. It never is in sports. That’s what makes it such a great leveler. After early success, there was a massive lull. The Chiefs won five of their first six postseason games. However, they lost ten of eleven playoff games, including an eight-game losing streak between 1982 and 2017. The Chiefs have risen from the ashes in recent times. Under head coach Andy Reid and QB Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have created a juggernaut.

Since 2017, the Chiefs have been to the playoffs almost every year. They have hosted the AFC Championship game for an NFL record five consecutive times. Mahomes is already a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and so is Andy Reid. Their superstar TE, Travis Kelce is arguably the greatest player at his position to ever play the game. With stars all over the roster, the Chiefs are in prime position to add to their legacy. Let’s have a look at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl triumphs over the years.

The Kansas City Chiefs have three rings. Their first Super Bowl championship came during the late 60s when they beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. It was followed by a period of playoff drought and mediocrity. However, the Chiefs have bounced back and how. They won their last two Super Bowls in the 2019 season and 2022 season respectively. They are currently the gold standard of the NFL and are in a position to dominate for years to come. The Chiefs have a 3-2 record in the Super Bowls.

Super Bowl IV: The First Taste of Glory

Imagine this: Len Dawson slinging the ball, Mike Garrett and Ed Podolak rushing like bulls, and a Willie Lanier and Buck Buchanan-led defense. All of which were orchestrated by the legendary Hank Stram. A certain way to succeed, huh? It was January 11, 1970, and the Minnesota Vikings, known as the ‘Purple People Eaters’ were the opposition. They were the favorites to win the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs just came out of the syllabus.

Len Dawson torched the Vikings’ defense to the tune of 142 yards (it was the 60s) and one touchdown en route to winning the Super Bowl MVP. But he wasn’t the best player for the Chiefs that day. It was a ferocious defense that held the Vikings to just 7 points. Vikings QB Joe Kapp was of tremendous help for the Chiefs as he threw for three interceptions. He was sacked twice by Buchanan, leaving the Vikings reeling. It was just an absolute demolition job. The Chiefs eventually won the game 23-7 and etched themselves into the history books.

Super Bowl LIV: The Patrick Mahomes Era

February 2, 2020, half a century after that glorious first Super Bowl, the Chiefs were back in the big game. This Chiefs’ team was led by the prodigious, uber-talented QB Patrick Mahomes. The signal-caller was drafted by the Chiefs in 2017 and was named their starter in 2018. Since then, Mahomes has torn the league apart with his magnificent play and supernatural ability to create something out of nothing. This Super Bowl run was one for the ages. Standing in their way were the indomitable San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers held a 20-10 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs, with Mahomes leading the charge, scripted a comeback for the ages. Mahomes finished the game with 286 yards and two touchdowns. His partners in crime? Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, combined for 203 yards. However, this was about ‘Mahomes Magic.’ The QB rallied his team around him and marched down the field twice to overcome a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit. If the first Super Bowl victory was glorious, this was magical.

Patrick Mahomes, at a mere 24, became the youngest quarterback to nab both the NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP titles. Super Bowl LIV was a tale of grit and talent, a testament to the Kansas City Chiefs’ never-say-die spirit. It was also sweet redemption for head coach Andy Reid, who had long been knocking on the Super Bowl door.

Super Bowl LVII: The Modern-Day Triumph

Super Bowl LVII was an absolute spectacle. A historic game. It was the first time a pair of brothers were playing against each other in the season’s final and ultimate game. The Kelce brothers grew up dreaming of playing in the Super Bowl. They each came into the game having won one Super Bowl each. Jason Kelce, The Philadelphia Eagles‘ center won his first. Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs’ superstar TE won his a couple of years later. It was time to go head-to-head and see who came out on top.

That wasn’t the only storyline during this game. Patrick Mahomes, already an NFL great and a Super Bowl champion, came into the game with questions surrounding his health. He injured his ankle during the Divisional Round against the Jacksonville Jaguars and reaggravated it in the Super Bowl. Mahomes is a fighter though. And that’s exactly what he did. He fought, got back to the field and did what does best, he dominated. The Super Bowl MVP stacked up 182 yards and 3 touchdowns enroute a 35-38 win.

The Eagles were a tough bunch. Their QB Jalen Hurts had a performance for the ages. He was terrific, and yet, somehow, Mahomes, with one leg, won the game. Andy Reid got his second Super Bowl in five years. The younger Kelce won his second in the Kelce Bowl. It was a game that solidified the Chiefs as a dynasty. A dynasty that’s going to dominate as long as they have Patrick Mahomes II.
