The Chargers won the 1963 AFL Championships. However, since becoming a part of the NFL, they are yet to lift a Super Bowl. They have appeared in the playoffs 15 times and have been a part of the AFC Championship game four times. They won their only AFC Championship game in 1994. That resulted in their only appearance in the Super Bowl to date.
The Chargers have had a host of great players throughout their 64-year history. They boast a total of eight players and one head coach enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Players such as tight end Kellen Winslow and quarterback Dan Fouts are some of the Chargers legends inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sid Gillman, the head coach and general manager of the Chargers in the 60s led the team to their only AFL Championship in 1963.
In recent years, players such as QB Philip Rivers and WR Keenan Allen have been a huge part of the Chargers’ history. Allen still plays for the Chargers as he is the primary target of superstar quarterback Justin Herbert. How many Super Bowls do the Los Angeles Chargers have?
The Los Angeles Chargers don’t have a Super Bowl title to their name yet. They won their only championship in 1963 when they were part of the AFL prior to the AFL-NFL merger. After becoming a part of the NFL, the Chargers went to the Super Bowl only once, in 1994, but lost to the San Francisco 49ers. They have been to four AFC Championship games but have only reached the Super Bowl once.
1963 AFL Championship
The 1963 AFL Championship game was the fourth of its kind played between the eventual champions, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Boston Patriots. The Chargers came into the game with a regular season record of 11-3 and with the Western Division title firmly in their pocket. This was their third division crown in four years. The Patriots, on the other hand, came into the game with a record of 7-6-1, which was also the Buffalo Bills‘ record that season. So the Championship contender was decided by a tiebreaker in Buffalo.
Naturally, the Chargers were the obvious favorites to win the game. They hosted the championship game and dismantled the Patriots, 51-10. Fullback Keith Lincoln was the game’s MVP. He rushed for 206 yards on 13 carries, led the Chargers in receiving yards with 123 and completed a pass for 20 yards.
How many Super Bowl appearances do the Los Angeles Chargers have?
Following that 1963 AFL Championship, the Chargers failed to reach another title game till the 1990s. They were back in the Championship game in 1995 as they played in Super Bowl XXIX. The game was played between the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers. The Chargers came into the game on the back of an 11-5 record. The Niners, however, boasted a 13-3 record as QB Steve Young finally leapt out of his predecessor Joe Montana‘s shadow.
The Niners won the game, 26-49. This was the first Super Bowl in which both teams scored in all four quarters. The Chargers fought hard, but the Niners were simply the better team on that day. Young was named the Super Bowl MVP for his Super Bowl-record six-touchdown performance. He completed 24 out of 36 passes for 325 yards. This was the Chargers’ first and, till date, their only Super Bowl appearance.
When was the last time the Los Angeles Chargers appeared in the AFC Championship game
The Los Angeles Chargers’ fourth and last bout with the AFC Championship game came in 2008 against the New England Patriots. This was the year when the Patriots went to the Super Bowl undefeated. They came into the game with a record of 17-0. They were the clear favorites to win against a Chargers team that was 11-5 that season.
Despite the Patriots being heavily favored to win by a big margin, the game was close throughout. The Chargers’ quarterback, Philip Rivers, played through a torn ACL. Due to injuries to key players, the Chargers weren’t able to find the end zone and all their points came through field goals. The Patriots won the game 21-12.
