The prominent American football team Miami Dolphins was founded in 1966 in the Miami metropolitan area. They are known to be one of the oldest teams in Florida, with Stephen M. Ross as the current owner. They are part of the American Football Conference (AFC), which they joined four years before the league merger. They have a rich history of the Super Bowl. Dolphins’ glory rests in five conference titles and two Super Bowl championships. They are the only team across the NFL to have an entire season undefeated. Initially, the team suffered many failures that resulted in the hiring of head coach Don Shula from the Baltimore Colts. And as he joined, a new era for the Dolphins began that led them to five playoff appearances, one of which landed them their first trip to the Super Bowl, back in 1972.

It was the season of 1972 when the Dolphins dominated the league, becoming the undefeated championships and paving their way to the Super Bowl. In addition to that, Miami is the pioneer of making three Super Bowl appearances back to back. With an amazing victory in 1972, the Dolphins did not appear in another Super Bowl for a decade in the 70s.

As the 80s arrived, so did the quarterback Dan Marino who to date, set major career NFL passing records and was seated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During this time, they also had the legendary Marks Brothers as wide receivers, who worked behind the line so that Dwight Stephenson could anchor as a centre and quarterback Marino ran the offense — establishing them as top-ranked in the league. Despite a strong team, the Dolphins made only one Super Bowl appearance in the mid-80s after 17 years, against the San Francisco 49ers but lost.

As Shula retired after the 1995 season, the franchise had moderate success in the 90s. In 2002, the team experienced their most extensive period without the postseason. When winning coach Bill Parcells joined in 2007, the Dolphins returned back to their old form. After claiming a division championship in 2008, Parcells left the franchise a couple of years later. This resulted in mediocrity again and their streak of seasons without any playoff berth leveled up to the 2015 franchise-record seven.

How many Super Bowls do the Miami Dolphins have won?

In their franchise longevity over half a decade, the Miami Dolphins have won two Super Bowls in the era of head coach Don Shula. They are the only team across the NFL who have won two consecutive Super Bowl titles — VII and VIII. Apart from that, the franchise has appeared in the Super Bowl two times — XVII and XIX, but couldn’t score a win. The detailed list of the Dolphins’ two Super Bowl victories is as follows:

1972: Super Bowl VII

After accepting defeat against the Dallas Cowboys in the 1971 season as their debut Super Bowl appearance, they wrote their names in history with the iconic win of 1972. Super Bowl VII was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, between the Dolphins and the Washington Redskins. Miami claimed a remarkable victory at 14-7 with a perfect undefeated season in history.

Following their Super Bowl win, the Dolphins’ safety Jake Scott was rewarded with the Super Bowl MVP title as he logged two interceptions with the most historic moment of the game, from the late fourth quarter. Miami was in the lead at 14-0 when head coach Shula sent out a kicker to take the lead at 17-0 and claim the victory. However, he was blocked by the opponent and the ball fell into the hands of Redskins kicker Garo Yepremian. He attempted a ball downfield throw but was intercepted and was later returned by a touchdown. That was the only point that Washington recorded throughout the game.

The Dolphins crushed the opponent Minnesota Vikings 24-7 at the Rice Stadium. The team was led by fullback Larry Csonka who finished the game with a record of 145 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

After their remarkable back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1972 and 1973, for Super Bowl VII and VIII, the Dolphins have made only two more Super Bowl appearances.
