How the Green Bay Packers are clearing cap space for 2022

The Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers have an extraordinary amount of work to do if they are going to get themselves under the cap for the 2022 NFL season. While teams do have their ways of making things work with salaries, the Packers want to keep Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams along for the long run, and that won’t be easy.
In terms of Aaron Rodgers, they first have to figure out a way to keep him around. After the disappointing end to the season, many wondered if Rodgers would want to be traded away from Green Bay. While he has yet to announce his plans for 2022, rumors have surfaced about him wanting a $50 million contract. Not difficult to imagine why that would be tough for the Green Bay Packers to make happen.

When it comes to Davante Adams, his demands aren’t as steep as Rodgers’ but he does want to be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL. Asking for a $30 million average per year really makes the Packers’ problems even worse. However, Green Bay could at least franchise tag Adams to keep him around for 2022 which would help to keep Rodgers happy.
So, their two best players both want big-money deals and the Packers are above the cap. How do they make it work? Well, they’ve recently made some moves to get the process rolling.

How the Green Bay Packers have been clearing cap space

Over the past few days, the Green Bay Packers have made 3 notable moves to clear some cap space. As reported by Field Yates, they are as follows:
- Converted $11.58 million of David Bakhtiari’s compensation to signing bonus
- Converted $3.58 million of Aaron Jones‘ compensation to signing bonus
- Saving $10.89 million by restructuring Kenny Clark’s contract
These few moves are crucial for 2022 as it’s likely that they want both Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams to sign and stay for a long time. At least in the case of Rodgers, he’s contracted through 2022, so if they don’t want to trade him, they don’t have to. If they can’t meet Adams’ demands, they’ll have to tag him to make sure he also stays for this season. It may not be helpful in the long run but at least they’ll be keeping their best players.
Now, this very much helps out their cause in 2022 but it does create some problems for the future. Clearing the cap space doesn’t just make the money issues go away. it simply delays it a bit. While that will help them remain competitive in 2022, if they don’t win anything then we’re right back to the same stage next offseason.
Assuming that Rodgers stays on his current contract and that they tag Davante Adams, that’ll give the Green Bay Packers the best shot at getting under the cap for this season but it will still be difficult for them to bring in new talent. If their star-studded team couldn’t win any Super Bowls in the past, it’s hard to see how a less reinforced team would be able to do so.
